So from these plate discipline stats which is the be-all, end-all that a guy has good pitch recognition?

I was thinking maybe the ratio of his swings on strikes to his swings on balls but you get surprising stuff if you do that but it makes sense to me.

So from these plate discipline stats which is the be-all, end-all that a guy has good pitch recognition?

O-swing %

The guy who swings at the least amount of pitches outside of the zone is the most patient

Right?

Yes, I agree swinging at balls outside the strike zone would be an indicator of poor plate discipline but I also think a batter that doesn't swing at a high percentage of strikes (so gets a lot of called strikes) should be an indicator of poor plate discipline so I was just wondering whether there's a stat that supposedly encompasses everything.

Might want to check with Nny on that one

Not one that encompasses everything afaik, but, I don't think a batter not swinging at a higher percentage of strikes is necessarily a bad thing. Better to take a pitch you can't do anything with even if it's a strike, then to hit a weak dribber/pop up/whatever.

I guess it depends on the count. With two strikes you should be swinging at a tough strike. With a 3-0 or 2-0 count you probably shouldn't swing at it. As a general rule I think it's not a good thing to not swing at a much higher percenatge of strikes than the average player.
