Posted May 8, 201312 yr The poor, Marlins-hating schlubs at the Herald just can't stop themselves. At least not when it comes to trying to blame Loria for the utter incompetence of the City of Miami, their employees and their duly appointed agents and their collective gigantic failure to lease the garage retail spaces and fulfill their pie-in-the-sky promises of nirvana made when they handed out money to a private business. http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/08/3386699_p2/dismantling-of-miami-marlins-hurt.html As I said in post #22 on the "Can we blame Loria for the parking garage retail-space debacle?" http://forums.marlinsbaseball.com/topic/98213-can-we-blame-loria-for-the-parking-garage-retail-space-debacle/?hl=%2Btilted+%2Bkilt Offhand, I'd guess Loria would much rather see all of that space fully leased than sell a few more hot dogs because it isn't. Tons of empty space does not leave a good impression -- and their name is on the park for now. If Loria had gone to them and said something like "let us handle it, we'll get it leased at, say, $20/ft and we'll pay $15/ft on anything we can't get leased within 12 months and pay that until it's leased," they'd have told him to get lost. For all we know, he did try it. Maybe more than once. But, politicians and bureaucrats never give up their absolute power over anything voluntarily -- unless it's become an embarrassment. Another year of abject failure and they may want to be rid of the problem. And, lo and behold, along comes Samson, who confirms, more or less, what I speculated was the case back in March: Marlins President David Samson, in an interview Thursday, said the team has repeatedly offered to help the city — at no charge — find tenants for the parking garage, but the city hasn’t been interested. “It’s been made clear since Day One that they were handling it, he said. It’s in the Marlins’ interests to have more tenants in place, Samson said, because their customers would buy parking spots and likely attend games. “The city said they’re not interested in help, he reiterated. They never are, they're only interested in their own power. After all, in their own minds they know best -- they're obviously smarter than everyone else, and certainly smarter than any private business or bunch of individuals like, say, the Marlins. Only a group of government morons could manage the total debacle that is the empty parking garage retail space, and only a group of newspaper retards like those at the Herald could see their way clear to carry their water. Oh, well. Close enough for government work. And "newspaper" work. Ya gotta love the Herald's agenda: Business bad. Marlins bad. Bad, bad, bad. :lol

Obviously the Marlins are smarter ... since they conned the county into spending $2.4 billion to build them a new stadium because the sun and the rain were keeping fans away from their games.

May 9, 201312 yr Personally, I don't think this article is particularly anti-Marlins. The article mentions that the city was struggling to fill the retail space even before the fire sales, and suggests that the fire sale exacerbated a pre-existing problem.
May 10, 201312 yr Author We disagree on some things, but we completely agree on this. Yup. And I salute you for bothering to mention that. There are business-based rent-seeking decisions to get a stadium built (perfectly logical) and baseball-based FO decisions (seemingly logical and justifiable, but always arguable.) Then, there's the omnipotent attitude of government which invariably comes to total ruin, witness their failure to lease sh!t in the way of garage retail space, where they thought they would create a "vibrant business community" out of nothing. That's always how they put it while they're about to waste tons of taxpayer dollars in their pursuit of highly admirable, and no doubt eminently "fair" unicorns and fairies. Some would call it the incantations of failed magicians.
