George Steinbrenner and his sons have taken advantage of the present system to buy their way into the playoffs 13 of the last 14 years. WIth the new Yankee stadium revenues, it is only going to get worse. Unless stopped, the Yankees will very soon completely dominate the AL East and the post season, year after year. Smaller market teams like the Marlins, the Orioles, Pittsburgh, and the Royals will have to settle for the scraps from the big market teams, with all the money. Essentially playing the role of the Washington Generals to the Harlem Globetrotters. The situation in MLB is getting worse, not better. The positive correlation between regular season winning percentage and team payroll is growing stronger, and so is the disparity between the big spending teams and the others. The Mets, The Dodgers, the Yankees, these teams will dominate more and more. Especially the Yankees. This is what the owners warned about when free agency started with the Curt Flood case in 1970. That it would eventually cause the ruination of MLB, with the biggest market teams garnering all the best talent, becoming virtual all star teams, and dominating MLB on a perpetual basis. The Steinbrenners do not seem to have any sense of sportsmanship or fair play and leaving the future of MLB up to them is a big mistake. They must be stopped, they can be stopped. It's true the Yankees haven't won the World Series lately under the present system. But they are guaranteed a winning record and that isn't right. They have been in the playoffs 13 of the last 14 years and with the new Yankee stadium revenues, their competitive advantage will grow. The Steinbrenners have shown they have no sense of restraint by signing CC and Tex last year, I expect their huge free agent signings and domination to continue unless MLB stops them with a salary cap.
