Would you prefer seeing a salary cap for MLB, which limits the total payroll for each team?

A salary floor would ruin the game and a salary cap would come damn close to it.

the owners would never agree to it. the rich owners would say that mlb is trying to keep small market teams an advantage. and the greedy small market owners wouldn't do it because then they wouldn't be able to use the excuse of large market teams are signing all the good players and they'd have to spend money to make their fans happy.

Yes, greedy small market teams should lose tens to hundreds of millions of dollars a year to sign overrated and overpriced players.

 

Which then means the city loses it's team because no person would be able to sustain a team at that net loss year after year.

I think the current system is working perfectly fine. Obviously it is slightly disappointing to know guys like Sabathia and Teixiera in the past offseason are going to go to 1 of maybe only 4 or 5 teams but as has been evident in recent years (Marlins as the best example), teams with low payrolls can be extremely competitive. The Tigers last year had a big salary and sucked so $$$ doesnt always translate to success (also shown by the fact the Yankees haven't won the WS for like 8 years).

Spending millions and millions of dollars doesnt mean your going to win the world series, or even, get there.

just look at the yanks and tigers.

 

i like the way it is now, just, i dont know, i wish there was a way they can slightly tweak the system. i mean for the marlins to have a payroll under 40 mil is ridiculous.

guys of the caliber like CC would never dream of signing here, because, unfortunetly, money is everything.

It's true the Yankees haven't won the World Series lately under the present system. But they are guaranteed a winning record and that isn't right. They have been in the playoffs 13 of the last 14 years and with the new Yankee stadium revenues, their competitive advantage will grow. The Steinbrenners have shown they have no sense of restraint by signing CC and Tex last year, I expect their huge free agent signings and domination to continue unless MLB stops them with a salary cap.

Salary Cap is needed. I understand the media loves to report on these mega contracts the Yankees give to their players, but you'll never see these small market teams ever truely become the dynasty's that these big spending franchises are, there needs to be a level playing field.

I like it how it is. I love it when small market teams with low pay rolls finish better than teams like the Yankees and Tigers. Money isn't everything. Talent and coaching is.

The only change I think is necessary is that EVERY team's payroll should exceed the amount of money that team receives in revenue sharing/luxury tax.

I fully expect to see 90% of this board vote for a salary cap, and that's fine. But to that end, when you see small teams barely spending more than they receive in revenue sharing, that pisses me off just as much. sh*t or get off the pot. If you can't invest money in your team, get the f*** out.

A salary cap is totally unnecessary. The game is doing fine without it, and there is more parity now than there was in the '50s and '60s. I guess this is a valid topic, but it seems to me that some fans just look for what's wrong with the game. Why can't they just enjoy it?

Baseball is a level playing field, how many times have the Yankees won the world series in this last decade? How about the Mets? How about the Cubs? How about Seattle? Yet how much have they spent?

 

Yet this decade, the Marlins have won the world series, so have the Angels (they had like a 50 mil payroll that year), and teams like the Rays and the Rockies have gotten to the World Series.

 

Teams with middle of the road payrolls are more than capable of competing with big market teams, they just need to know how to spend the money and develop good young talent, because they only disadvantage they have over the big market teams is that they can't spend their way out of trouble if some of their contracts don't pan out.

 

As for the salary cap is not as much that I'm against it, it's more that I know it won't happen, so I just look for the positives in the current system.

People and others have been arguing for a salary cap for years. I think if Commisioner Selig wanted it to occur, it would be implemented by now.

I prefer the English system. If some teams can't compete at the Major League level, they should be sent to a lower division. Bottom feeding teams whose ownership doesn't care to win and doesn't need to win to make money should be sent to AAA. Perennial losers like Baltimore and Pittsburgh should be placed on probation after 7 straight losing season, and if after 4 more seasons they can't produce a winning record the franchise should be either revoked and sold to a competetnt ownership group, or the franchise should be devoted to AAA where they must win the IL or PCL Championship to gain admittance to the major leagues.

 

Too long lousy ownership has driven good fans away. Peter Angelos maybe the worst owner in sports, at least in baseball.

George Steinbrenner and his sons have taken advantage of the present system to buy their way into the playoffs 13 of the last 14 years. WIth the new Yankee stadium revenues, it is only going to get worse. Unless stopped, the Yankees will very soon completely dominate the AL East and the post season, year after year. Smaller market teams like the Marlins, the Orioles, Pittsburgh, and the Royals will have to settle for the scraps from the big market teams, with all the money. Essentially playing the role of the Washington Generals to the Harlem Globetrotters.

 

The situation in MLB is getting worse, not better. The positive correlation between regular season winning percentage and team payroll is growing stronger, and so is the disparity between the big spending teams and the others. The Mets, The Dodgers, the Yankees, these teams will dominate more and more. Especially the Yankees.

 

This is what the owners warned about when free agency started with the Curt Flood case in 1970. That it would eventually cause the ruination of MLB, with the biggest market teams garnering all the best talent, becoming virtual all star teams, and dominating MLB on a perpetual basis.

 

The Steinbrenners do not seem to have any sense of sportsmanship or fair play and leaving the future of MLB up to them is a big mistake. They must be stopped, they can be stopped. By a hard salary cap. I believe that with an even playing field the Yankees would slowly sink the bottom of the AL East, maybe even lose 100 games. This is something I would love to see, but it can never, ever happen under the current system, which guarantees them a perpetual winning record.

 

Several owners have come out in favor of a salary cap. I hope the Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria does the same.

Well said. But it will never happen.

I think it's short sighted in thinking that ML payroll is the only thing a team has to pay for, though.

 

Plus it would just lead to stupid contracts to hit the floor. Floors only hinder a team.
