GREENSBORO (SAL) 3B TOM MERKLE crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to help the Bats edge the Asheville Tourists, 6-4. After OF JEREMY HERMIDA led off the extra frame with a single, Merkle, who singled and scored in the third inning, ripped a one-out homer to snap a 4-4 tie for Greensboro, which has already played in eight extra inning games this season. A 15th-round selection of the Florida Marlins in the 2002 draft, Merkle was playing in just his third game in the lower level Class A South Atlantic League.
