March 18, 200422 yr Aside from the fact we're one of the few nations without a state controlled meida and oiur debt rating is two when it should be one, here are more problems... 3. Effective, Fair Police Force: 2.0 The police forces of the United States protect its citizens from crime and criminals quite effectively. However, the fairness of the police force on minorities is in constant question. The police forces use of racial profiling and questionable shootings of Hispanics and African Americans causes minorities to be fearful of their encounters with the police force. These types of racism and unequal treatment discourage the creation of businesses run by minorities which decreases wealth. The overwhelming majority of the police don't brutalize anyone and a couple of isolated incidents with stupid people (which no country's cop force is free of) does not give our police a a 2. We're a 5. We don't intimidate rival political factions with police, police can be sued, police constantly go to trial. I'm convinced problems are minimal. 8. Education: 2.0 The education institutions of the United States are extremely high in their ability to compete with the standards of other nations. The education that most children receive gives the United States an extremely competitive business market, which creates wealth. The literacy rates in the United States are at 95.5%. In 1999, the number of children attending secondary education totaled 53, 215 (in thousands). The number of students continuing on after secondary education totaled 14,881 (in thousands). The education rates and trends of the United States certainly encourage and promote economic opportunity and wealth creation. However, the money that is given to schools for education is not equally distributed. In wealthier areas, students have higher opportunities for education and advancement in education. In poorer areas, students do not have the same opportunities for education and advancement is often difficult. Source: National Center for Education Statistics, http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=65, 25 April 2001 Again, American education is more well rounded than what's available in other countries and has its pros in cons. What america does have is far greater socioeconomic diversity, which presents a problem for our education system when compared to others. 9. Social Mobility: 2.0 Although the rights of individuals of different ethnic backgrounds are protected in the United States, the trends of the social earnings of different groups tend to show that minorities on the average earn less than other groups. In 1998, the average income of Whites totaled $42,504, Blacks totaled $27,910, Asians totaled $51,205, and Hispanics totaled $30,735. This statistics show the difficulty in social mobility within the United States and unfair distribution of high paying jobs to the majority rather than the minorities. Source: Census Bureau, http://www.census.gov, 25 April 2001 That's a load of crap. Latinos have a high lesser paid immigrant population. Asians make MUCH MORE than whites. It seems like the only group that has no excuse are blacks. You know who I blame? Black people. On average blacks indebt themselves at far higher rates (an average black household making $30,000 spends as much money as a white household raking in $50,000.) Blacks graduate a lower rates, attend college at lower rates, and don't graduate the colleges they attend at far lower rates. One problem is strictly social, and it is that there's truly a spending problem. There's a lack of investment in future generation's futures and are highly self-relegated to urban surroundings. Don't tell me blacks can't leave the city, my friggin' neighbors are from half a world away and they work their butts off and they don't live in no city. The opinion of every friend or acquintance from the city I know, blacks generally are more willing to blame their problems on others. I honestly believe that all of us like to pretend WE'Re not the reason behind our own failures, but when you generally make less money, graduate less, and get yourself in more debt, blaming "the man" or whoever else only WORSENS your situation and gives the appearance that all you are willing to do is blame your problems on everyone else but yourself. Affirmative action lets too many unqualified black students into further education they are not trained enough to excell in. I firmly beleive that every ethnicity generally on average has an equal mental potential. However, inequitable schooling put lower socioeconomic classes at a disadvantage. Whether they be white, black, latino, immigrant, or whatever the zone of proximity, the ability for teacher scaffolding to bring you up to speed with everyone else because you have just enough innate ability and training to put yourself to a equal level, is not quite as wide as MANY affirmative action programs permit. A great example of this is the fact that close to 40% of the black students in many univerisites drop out. I'm sure they want to graduate, but they cannot because they were not up to the challenge and at times one cannot be. We live in a capitalist society. It is close to impossible to ensure every school is fully equitable and though we should try to improve upon that, EOP programs are generally too encompassing and this can do more harm than good. Furthermore, how does it affect society when people feel entitled to be given jobs when they have lesser ability? Education should be improved for everyone, but the moment one's education is done with and EOP programs and such are ALREADY in place, there is no more that can be done with someone without enforcing inherently unequal racial hiring practices. Such practices are immoral, because when one has in theory been given an equal oppurtunity through education, anything more would be nothing more than an inequitable advantage for a select group of people. This is unacceptable, yet making people believe they are entitled to such programs makes people believe they NEED such programs and therefore they can never go away. America's economic system awards those who have significant merit and justly so. Already in place are inequitable admissions and hiring programs to help "disadvantaged races", when in reality only the black ethnicity is at the point where there seems to be an insurmountable socioeconomic problem. Yes, the economic problem today has far greater social underpinnings than it has economic. Immigrants are becoming successful every day in America through hard work. If anyone works hard it is not a fairy tale that they become successful. My Dad has six Turkish guys work for him in his White Plains Serivce Shope years ago (I beleive it was White Plains.) They took showers with a hose, slept on oil cases, and guess what? They're even more filthy rich than they were filthy; they're millionaires. Why? They worked their damn butts off. My butcher Guillermo came in to a random place and did not know any English, but he offered to brrom the floor. He worked hard, learned to cut me, and is now successful. Generally, society is just too lazy. No where on Earth has more social mobility for ANY ethnicity or socioeconomic class than America, so to give it a 2.0 is not only stupid, it is totally wrong. America is most definitely a 5.0. Hell, we only have the most powerful economy on Earth, the Earth's richest citizens, and the most oppurtunity for one's merit to determine one's destiny.
March 18, 200422 yr Some good points... The site is still interesting though. Of course they're good! Dude, you work hard, the same will come to you. The site seemed to be right one when it came to non-politically motivated opinions.
March 21, 200422 yr The overwhelming majority of the police don't brutalize anyone and a couple of isolated incidents with stupid people (which no country's cop force is free of) does not give our police a a 2. We're a 5. We don't intimidate rival political factions with police, police can be sued, police constantly go to trial. I'm convinced problems are minimal. How can you be so sure? Are you a low income minority? There is a perception gap in this country. The police are feared by many low income minorities because of questionable tactics that they face everyday. Then those who rarely come across police misaction are positive that it is overblown. I support America's police officers 100% but racial profilings happens which makes it look like blacks and hispanics commit more crimes which justifies racial profiling even more and on and on and on. Im not saying high crime areas should be patrolled heavier. On the contrary, I think they should. But a black guy walking in a middle class neighborhood shouldNT be automatically pulled over. And the police need to work in tandem with the low income neighborhoods. Most the people in these neighborhoods hate criminals but they wont work with the police because of police misconduct incedents that go unpunished and tactics which the police use over and over again. That feeds the criminals.
March 21, 200422 yr How can you be so sure? Are you a low income minority? Surprise surprise, everytime in the city, bad neighborhood or not, I don't see cops beating people around for no reason. Now if a cop defends himself against a black person it is atuomatically a hate crime and they get close scrutiny. That's bull. There was a video that liberals were making a big deal about when a bunch of cops some how hurt this black teen. However, the racism humbug stopped when one of the cops were, you guessed it, black! The cops were acting in self defense. There is a perception gap in this country. The police are feared by many low income minorities because of questionable tactics that they face everyday. Then those who rarely come across police misaction are positive that it is overblown. Police misaction is overblown. I'm sure there are a**hole cops that do bad things, but that cannot be an indictment against America's police. What tactics exactly? DWB, or driving while black is so exaggerated. I mean, every time a black guy gets pulled over, they figure it must be racism. And quite frankly, if I see a couple of guys covered with jewelery in a hokey Escalade, I'm going to assume they're drug dealers, no matter their skin tone and on purpose pull them over when they break the law. I agree, the average joe drving his toyota camry shouldn't be pulled over just because he's black, but I doubt this happens as often as people perceive. Personally I'm for ethnic profiling. In my honest opinion, it is necessary for America's security to profile people from suspect countries with suspect visas or that fit the general look, age, and ect of a certain group. It is not a matter of right or wrong, it is a matter of statistics. My dad used to get profiled all the time, because for some reason they thought he appeared to be an Arab terrorist or something. However, after 9-11 the profiling stopped. This is absurd. The "hispanic crime rate" is extremely exaggerated and it fits their proportion of population in society. Blacks however cause far more crime for a combonation of economic, but more importantly social problems. I'm not going to blame the cops when it appears that statisitcally Latinos can follow the law at far higher rates. Don't tell me that blacks are just more afraid to go to the police, it is more complicated than that.
March 21, 200422 yr it is a matter of statistics Actually its a reversal of logic. Because those who do an act have a certain characteristic does not mean they compose a larger percentage of the that characteristic. Its that kind of logic that had the police and FBI in Louisianne and the FBI in Virginia scurrying around for a middle age white male when the actual Louisianna killer and DC sniper were black. Tim McVeigh killed a lot of people in OKC. There are militias out there that are pretty scared of the government. Most racially motivated crimes against minorities are commited by whites. Now based on that logic, should we racially profile whites who dress like they are from Montana as also being terrorist threats? There are hundreds upon hundreds of ethic minorites who travel via airplane. Is it worth massivley inconveniencing them? By your logic we should just ship em all out of here and never let any dark skin person in the country again. Woudlnt that shut down terrorism? Racially profiling people would fit right into the terrorists hands. They want that to happen for two reasons. One is they want the 98% peaceful middle eastern and south asian populations of the world to be like them and be hateful and spiteful against the west and the best way to do that is to goad the west into alienating more people. Mission gradually being accomplished. These guys commited suicide literally and figuartivley. They knew that when they flew those planes into the buildings, Al Quada would get crushed by the US. But they had to get the US to act rash and create more enemies. Second, if you tell the terrorists who you are going to check, they will play your defense. They have whites, blacks, hispanics, and asian people who are willing to do the same thing. Look at southeast asia(asian bombers), Chechnya and Bosia(whites fundamentalists), look at Mussoui(black), look at the dirty bomber Paddilla?(hispanic). They have plenty of women too. The person who used flowers with a bomb in it to kill Indians Prime Minister a decade ago was an elderly women. Like I said, youd be playing into their hands. Of course you dont care because it doesnt adversley affect you. Typical conservative mentality. Never really looking out for the best of the nation and ALL of its persons. As far as all of your opinions on racial profiling, it seems your only response is, its exagerrated or overblown. How am I supposed to respond to that.
