Kansas Gov. to sign illegal immigrants tuition bill

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) -- A bill offering some illegal immigrants a tuition break at Kansas' public colleges and universities cleared the Legislature on Tuesday and headed to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who plans to sign it.

 

The House voted 68-54 for the measure, which won Senate passage earlier this year.

 

The proposal extends in-state tuition -- which is much lower than tuition for nonresidents -- to illegal immigrants who have attended a Kansas high school at least three years and graduated or who earned a general educational development certificate in Kansas.

 

To receive the lower tuition, an immigrant would have to be actively seeking legal immigration status or plan to do so when eligible.

 

Proponents contended that many of the immigrants who will benefit have lived and attended schools in Kansas for years and intend to remain in the state.

 

Opponents argued that the proposal would reward lawbreakers and perhaps even aid terrorists.

 

"If terrorists come to get a pilot's license at a Kansas university, at least we gave them in-state tuition before they used it against us," Rep. Scott Schwab, a Republican, said sarcastically, drawing boos from some in the chamber.

 

Kansas residents pay much less than students from outside the state at public universities. In the current semester, for example, in-state tuition for 15 credit hours at Kansas State University is $1,755, compared to $5,700 for undergraduates from other states.

 

Realizing that I am a 5th generation WASP Northerner, please someone explain to me what exactly is the incentive to even become a US citizen anymore? Last time I checked, illegals:

 

* Could obtain driver licenses

* Had free access to emergency medical care

* Do not need to habla an ounce of english

* Find work that far and away exceeds anything they would make in their homeland

 

Now, I'm no xenophobe. I recognize the immensely positive effects immigration has had on this country and the evolution of it's common character. But when is this going to stop? The US is turning into a summer camp. Illegals are people who have absolutely no positive effect on the US society aside from providing cheap labor to employers who wish to circumvent federal employment taxes. Someone please tell me what the hell good are they, and more importantly, why are we bending over backwards for them?

I have no use for people of any culture white,black,yellow,brown,red,turqouise,perriwinkle, who come into the country illegally, get free emergency healthcare (which tax paying citizens dont even get) Work tax free (Hence the illegal nature) and snatch up jobs because theyre willing to work cheaper. This is one of the reasons we have a high unemployment rate here, the people who are legally citizens cant get jobs because the illegals do the same work for 2 bucks an hour less. Its not fair, and it should be stopped.

How exactly do they "put money into the economy."

 

They pay no taxes, yet reap the rewards of all the services and social endeavors designed by the gov't for citizens an LEGAL resident aliens.

Legal or Ilegal

 

You will WALK out of any public hospitals with bills to pay if you don't have insurance.

Some of those illegal immigrants were raise in the U.S.They were brought to U.S at very early age and had no say in the desicion their parents made.A large number of immigrants have gone through K-12 while graduating with honors.Why shouldn' they have a chance to pursue higher learning?

 

In the long run the United States of America will benefit from educated new citizens.

They take low end jobs at lower rates allowing companies to take said savings and reinvest it in other areas such. Taco Bell wouldnt be as cheap if they didnt have migrant farm workers picking the tomatos at low end rates.

 

 

They also spend some of their money from the low end jobs into the economy. I have no numbers but its a decent figure. Taxes arent the only way people put money into the economy. In fact its actually a very ineffecient way.

 

 

Like someone said, these are their kids who get raised in this country who want to get the residency breaks. Yeah these kids didnt pay taxes but neither did the kids who are getting the breaks now.(yeah I know their parents do but why punish the kids?)

 

 

Whatever you want to say about illegal immigrants, I have a lot of respect for them. They work a lot harder at longer hours in difficult jobs compared to a lot of lazy "tax payers." Youre average white collar middle level worker goofs off on the internet while doing a s***ty job with simple desk work-now thats who I dont respect.
