Castillo may go to the Cards and if he does then Hooper will gtet called Up! Also Borland Returns...

CASTILLLO TO CARDS?

Luis Castillo and Edgar Renteria spent parts of three seasons (1996-98) as the Marlins' double-play combination. According to major league sources, the St. Louis Cardinals are intrigued by the notion of a reunion.

Castillo can be a free agent at season's end, but a midseason trade could stabilize a position that has already seen the Cardinals lose Fernando Vina (hamstring) and Miguel Cairo (hand) to injury. The Cardinals also have scouted fading Mets star Roberto Alomar, another prospective free agent, but were said to be unimpressed.

While the Marlins aren't ready to break up their core with the wild card in sight, they are far more likely than not to deal Castillo before the July 31 non-waiver deadline. At least two teams that inquired in recent weeks about Triple-A second baseman Kevin Hooper were told he's not available.

If Castillo is traded, Hooper could be his successor. Hooper's 301 on-base percentage at Triple-A Albuquerque is a concern, though.

The Cardinals acquired Renteria in December 1998 for a three-player package that included relievers Braden Looper and Armando Almanza.

BORLAND returns

Sidelined reliever Toby Borland was in the clubhouse on Monday for the first time since undergoing an appendectomy six weeks ago. Borland was diagnosed while the team was in Los Angeles and remained hospitalized there for 11 days.

Transferred from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list on June 22, Borland is eligible to come off on July 13. He has been throwing for about a week and hopes to resume pitching competitively in about three.

"After I had surgery I didn't feel real good," said Borland, who returned to his Louisiana home from Los Angeles to begin recuperating.

"A couple of times I told the doctor to come in there because my blood pressure was starting to get real low. It was scary. I was starting to see stuff. I was talking to somebody and there was nobody there."
