Montages

From IMDB.com message board:

I really enjoyed the montage scene in Team America. It provided nice comic relief after the curiously odd and creepy blow job scene. So I listed some of my favorite Hollywood montages of my own:

10.) THE "AINT THE KID CUTE" MONTAGE

You can find this montage in plenty of movies. There's usually an adult who is totally unfit to be a parent who, as fate would have it, happens upon a kid. The adult hates the kid, but during the passing of time, learns to accept the kid's faults as cute faults, then begins to love the misunderstood kid. The "Aint the Kid Cute" Montage usually ends with a shot of the adult quietly closing the door of the kid who's now asleep after an exhausting day of maintaining cuteness.

Examples: d*** Tracy, Look Who's Talking, Big Daddy

9.) THE "BEAT THE CLOCK" MONTAGE

Overused montage found in mostly 80s films where all teenagers were Einstein and adults were all idiots. The teens, who have outsmarted the adults for the 1000th time, now have to race the clock, clean up and be good little angels before the dumb adults catch them in the act of doing something naughty.

Examples: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Adventures in Babysitting, Weird Science

8.) THE "AWW, THEY'RE FALLING IN LOVE" MONTAGE

Young love, that is. You'll never see any real adults in this montage. Just young love. Middle aged people don't have time for this kind of stuff. After all, going to movies, arcades, parks, beaches, and carnivals all before sunset is a feat that to this day still amazes me.

Examples: 50 First Dates, Which Way Is Up, Chasing Amy, Never Been Kissed, The Karate Kid

7.) THE "IT LOOKS LIKE SH*T BUT WE CAN FIX IT UP" MONTAGE

This montage is usually reserved for a dirty house, a crappy car or a hopeless school. Just when you think things can't be saved, they can.

Examples: The Heavenly Kid, Revenge of the Nerds, Lean On Me, The Principal, Stephen King's It

6.) THE AWFUL "GAME SHOW" MONTAGE

How many times do we have to see cast members of movies go on a gameshow? They always start off terribly, but after only a few questions, the answers (and the winnings) start stacking up.

Examples: Class Act, White Men Can't Jump, Magnolia, Mean Girls

5.) THE HORRID "TRYING ON NEW CLOTHES" MONTAGE

You've seen it a million times. Some dork gets a lesson from a cooler dork who decides to take them shopping for new clothes. The first clothes they pick are always bad choices, but as time goes on, the clothes get better and better. Curiously, the clothes they end up with always look a hundred times worse than the ones they started with.

Examples: Fraternity Vacation, The Heavenly Kid, National Lampoon's European Vacation, Can't Buy Me Love

4.) THE DREADFUL "MONEY IS ROLLING IN" MONTAGE

Ordinary Joe's just like you and me go into some illegal scheme to make money. As time goes on, watch the dough come rolling in! Clothes get better, cars get fancier and houses become enormous. Could there possibly be a downside to all this good fortune?

Examples: Scarface, New Jack City, Boiler Room, Donnie Brasco, Better Luck Tomorrow

3.) THE WRETCHED "DRIVING AROUND VIEWING THE CITY" MONTAGE

A great way to execute the "fish out of water" scenario. This montage uses either a nerd who's never been outside, or an urban street thug who's never been downtown. You must drive around in a convertible, looking upwards and pointing, giddy as a schoolgirl. You must drive past things you've never seen before, like a car full of hot chicks, street performers, and bars with neon signs reading, "Girls, Girls, Girls."

Examples: Once Bitten, Fraternity Vacation, Beavis and Butthead Do America, Revenge of the Nerds 2, Swingers, The Heavenly Kid, Disorderlies, Doctor Detroit, Beverly Hills Cop

2.) THE IDIOTIC "PREPARE FOR WAR" MONTAGE

We've got to prepare for a big war! Usually against an army, a creature, or an army of creatures. Our hero does in a very short time what most people could never do in ANY amount of time. Every precaution is necessary, and every precaution will be used later.

Examples: A Nightmare on Elm Street, From Dusk Til Dawn, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, First Blood, Commando, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Dawn of the Dead (2004)

1.) THE "PUSH YOURSELF TO THE LIMITS AND YOU CAN DO IT" MONTAGE

Used more than any other montage in Hollywood. Seen in lots of sports movies, this montage is always associated with hopeless losers who start off with the skill level of hamster vomit, but of course, start "coming along" after much practice. The old "believe in yourself and you can do it" theme never gets old. No matter how bad you are when you begin, with just a little practice, you will succeed.

Examples: Rocky, Better Off Dead, Rocky II, The Karate Kid, Rocky III, The Karate Kid 2, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Lean On Me, Rocky III, The Karate Kid 3, Rocky IV, Dangerous Minds, Kill Bill Vol.2, Rocky V
