Rule 5 Draft

Featured Replies

Id love it if we picked up any of the following guys

Royce Ring, LHP (Mets)-Ex-first round pick of the White Sox before heading to NY in the Roberto Alomar trade in mid-?03. 6-foot-5, 220-pound lefty hasn?t put up mind-blowing numbers, but hasn?t pitched badly at any stop, either, reaching AAA last season (3.63 ERA, 29 G). A career reliever dating back to his time at San Diego State, Ring will be 24 for Opening Day.

Andy Sisco, LHP (Cubs)-6-foot-9, 250 pounds, and 22 years old, but hasn?t pitched above High-A. A 2nd round pick in 2001 out of a Washington high school. Solid numbers at every level, and K?d more than a batter per inning in the Florida State League in 2004. But also walked 4.6 per nine and almost four per nine for his four-year professional career. He might have the highest upside of any pitcher in the Rule 5 Draft, but is going to be raw. The pundits think he might be one of the first players picked.

Colt Griffin, RHP (Royals)-Ballyhooed for being the first high school pitcher to reach 100 mph on the radar gun, Griffin was nevertheless about as raw as a top 10 selection could be. The Royals took him ninth overall in 2001, and he?s managed to stay relatively healthy, but otherwise has struggled every bit as much as you might expect. Colt was moved to relief after posting a 8.73 ERA in eight 2004 starts at High-A Wilmington. Indeed he did make progress at AA Wichita, walking just 16 in 31.1 innings and cutting his ERA to 4.02. You?re still talking about a 22-year-old who?s walked as many as he?s struck out in his professional career, but will some club remember the radar guns?

any one of those arms would be great

It's Rule V, punk.

Have a nice day, m00k.

Actually it is the Rule 5 draft, though it's been called the Rule V for years by just about everybody for some reason. Check out this from the mlb site ... Important Dates in 2004

BTW, the Rule 4 draft is the June amateur draft.

V = 5

V = 5

No kidding. I made it through 2nd grade too. But everybody calls it the Rule V draft, like that's the official name of it, like the Super Bowl with the Roman numerals. It's not - it's the Rule 5 draft. So most of the time when somebody gets it right and writes it as "Rule 5" somebody else feels the need to correct it when it's not wrong to start with.

I don't know if it was officially called the Rule V draft at one time and they changed it or if the media just screwed it up from the get-go.

C'mon - Ramp/Maverick/Goldmember isn't right that often. Let him enjoy it when he is, even if he didn't realize it. :)

Maybe Free Agency rules are listed in Roman Numerals, as is standard practice, as opposed to Arabian numbers?

And it is my mission in life to pick on Rump everytime possible

They're not - they're Arabic numbers. That's why the MLB site refers to it as Rule 5. It doesn't mean anything - I just remember reading an article about it a couple of years ago, how everybody refers to it as Rule V instead of Rule 5 which is the official name of it.

And it is my mission in life to pick on Rump everytime possible

That's a noble mission. Carry on.

I think we can agree that Rule V, however fatally wrong it may be, is still the cooler of the two.

true

I'm pretty shocked that the Cubs left Sisco unprotected.

The Cubs believe Andy Sisco will go to the Royals with the second pick in the Rule 5 draft. Chicago Tribune source
