Problems with Hotmail, Windows Update and more

Featured Replies

This may be nothing new for some here, but I rarely come to the tech support board. I felt the need to share this though cause it took me like 2 months to find this..

I was having problems with the following (I'm running WinXP Pro Sp2):

1. Logging into Hotmail (I was able to get to the login screen, but once I entered my user name and password, IE would show a few progress bars, then error out with Page Cannot be displayed)

2. Running Windows Update. I would be able to get into the site and select Express Install. Once it would begin to scan, it would error out after a couple of minutes. I forget the error, but every fix I found (especially on Microsoft.com)referenced DNS or name resolution problems. All I found was suggestions on removing WindowsUpdate from my hosts file, like I'd have it in there to begin with, adding WindowsUpdate to my trusted site list, etc..

3. And this one affected me here... I wasn't able to add large posts on this message board. I was only able to add posts with an average amount of text. If I tried to reply and quote someone, with a long history in the quote, it would just hang. I'd have to hit Fast Reply, and keep them short.

4. Uploading pictures to websites.. I wasn't able to upload pictures to this website, Picturetrail, or any other image hosting websites. It would hang as soon as I'd try to upload it..

What's odd is that I was able to do all of this if I was dialed into my office. I dial in through a VPN software called Extranet. If I was dialed in through there and going through my office proxy server, everything worked...

Anyways, what I finally did to fix ALL OF THIS.. Was download Dr. TCP and set the MTU on my NIC to 1458... This is apparently, a GUI to your registry and it modifies the TCP settings...

I am one happy camper now.. and I had to share in case anyone else is experiencing the same thing....

Here's the site with instructions for settings Dr. TCP up ---> Dr. TCP

Never use Hotmail. Move to Yahoo Mail.

This also affected Yahoo... Most of the sites I found were titled "problems logging into Hotmail or Yahoo".. It's not a Hotmail problem. It's a problem with your TCP settings and the transfer rate on a lot of websites.

But keep in mind, this affected a lot more than just email.. The things I mentioned were just the major problems.

It doesn't affect everyone. Only a couple of guys I work with had a similar problem. I found a lot of people with the problem on the web and this is the solution.

If your'e good to go, then don't worry about it brother... I just think this might help some people, cause the ones I found on the web were going nuts trying to fix it. I know I was...

the only prob I had with win xp sp2 was that my internet connection got all screwed up and had to call tech support to get it right. I use Yahoo mail daily and have had o problems at all.

where's that wood to knock on?
