Marlins in town for San Diego Chicken's first Petco appearance

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - Petco Park will go to the birds on May 14.

The San Diego Chicken will make his first appearance at the Padres' year-old ballpark during that night's game against the Florida Marlins.

"From a bird's eye perspective, I think it's an unflappable ballpark," said Ted Giannoulas, the San Diego resident who has been entertaining sports fans since 1974 with his brand of fowl humor while dressed in a chicken costume.

The San Diego Chicken didn't appear during Petco's inaugural season in 2004. His last appearance at a Padres game was in September 2003 during the team's final weekend at Qualcomm Stadium.

Giannoulas said he attended a few games at Petco Park as a fan last year, and said it will be "a very, very good stage for me to perform in. We've got something that's really beautiful at Petco, and that's dugout roofs. We've never had that."

At Qualcomm, the dugouts were under the first few rows of seats.
