60 seconds with Frank Castillo

Wednesday, March 09, 2005

Staff writer Joe Capozzi talked to Marlins pitcher Frank Castillo, a non-roster invitee who will get a World Series ring for pitching exactly one inning for the Red Sox last year.

How much action did you get with the world champs last year?

I was in Pawtucket nearly the whole year. But I was up in Boston for like a week in April.

And you made the best of it?

I only got two outings and it added up to one whole inning.

You probably remember every pitch!

I remember coming in to face (Miguel) Tejada one game and A-Rod in another. I got them out so I guess I did all right.

When they swept the Cardinals, did you wonder if you'd get a ring?

I watched the World Series at home on TV in Scottsdale, Ariz. I never really thought about it when I was watching them, but guys here started asking me in spring training wondering if I was. Then I started more or less thinking about it. Before that, to be honest with you, I didn't think I was going to get one. When you only throw an inning you don't really feel like you should receive one.

Maybe they think you had a critical role in breaking The Curse.

After 86 years, it's very generous of them to do that.

How did you find out you were getting a ring?

They had called my agent. He called me, left a message, "Boston called. They want to know what your ring size is." I called him back and let him know.

When will you get it?

I don't know. I'm not sure how they're going to do it.

Anyone else getting a ring who pitched less than you?

Brandon Puffer got called up for one day and he's getting a ring. He didn't even pitch in a game. What they're doing is pretty classy.

What will you do with it?

I probably won't ever wear it but I'll definitely show it off!
