Giants place Bonds on 15-day DL

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The San Francisco Giants placed Barry Bonds on the 15-day disabled list Saturday as they finalized their roster for opening day, the third time the slugger has been on the DL in his career.

The move is retroactive to March 25. Bonds, who will begin his 20th major league season, is recovering from two operations on his troublesome right knee in a seven-week span, the latest on March 17.

Bonds has been rehabilitating his knee in San Francisco and isn't sure when he'll return to resume his quest for the career home run record. His 703 homers trail only Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (755).

Bonds last went on the disabled list from April 18 to June 9, 1999, as he recovered from elbow surgery.

Manager Felipe Alou said he would start Pedro Feliz in Bonds' spot in left field for the season opener Tuesday against the defending NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bonds, the seven-time NL MVP, said earlier this spring he might miss half the season or even the whole year, but others don't believe it.

``I saw him come in this morning and he was walking better than I saw him yesterday, but I won't ask,'' Alou said. ``I'll know when he's going to start feeling better as soon as I see him with a bat. I haven't seen him with a bat yet.''

No surprise here.
