Radio legend's 60th season: Hall of Fame play-by-play radio announcer Rafael "Felo" Ramirez is starting his 60th season in professional baseball. The Spanish-language radio voice of the Marlins since their inception, Ramirez was named the Ford C. Frick Award winner in 2005, gaining induction into the Hall of Fame.

 

Before Tuesday's opener, Ramirez reflected on some of the highlights in his distinguished career. Speaking through an interpreter, he recalled his first opening game. It was a 1950 game between the Yankees and Red Sox at Fenway Park.

 

"Frank Shea was pitching for the Yankees, and he struck out Ted Williams," Ramirez said. "It was the only time that I ever saw Williams swing at a bad pitch. So on his next at-bat, Williams hit a 400-foot home run. As he was turning around second, he was looking up and spitting on the field because he had some issues with the press at the time."

 

Ramirez sees this year's Marlins team making a strong playoff run, and he is predicting a big season from Miguel Cabrera. The key, Ramirez said, will be the pitching.
