April 27, 200521 yr Game recaps... Sun-Sentinel, Herald, PB Post, MLB Marlins, Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, MLB Rockies On Beckett's hit... And Beckett wasn't even supposed to be swinging. With runners at first and third and one out, manager Jack McKeon wanted his pitcher bunting to stay out of the double play. But with Mike Lowell breaking from third, Beckett, who missed the bunt sign, pulled the bat back and drove Wright's pitch into the power alley for the first two-run hit of his career. /---/ Miami Herald Neither McKeon nor Beckett admitted to the missed sign. "We were going to let him go another inning," McKeon said. "When we had that long inning, forget it." Beckett said he thought Lowell left third to deke pitcher Jamey Wright and the Rockies' defense. Asked whether he was surprised McKeon did not lift him for a pinch hitter, Beckett said: "I don't know. That's not my call. There are a lot of variables. I don't know. [Wright] pretty much hit my bat with [the pitch]. I don't take much credit for that at all. I'm not very good." /---/ Sun-Sentinel McKeon said he never considered pinch-hitting for Beckett. Yet, he was forced to remove Beckett following the inning. Beckett made the score 6-3 and started a Marlins barrage that finished with five runs. /---/ PB Post On Conine-gate... Don't be surprised to see Jeff Conine in tonight's starting lineup. Conine might go the rest of the season without seeing more favorable circumstances. Not only is Conine a lifetime .423 hitter (33 for 78) at Coors Field, he owns left-hander Joe Kennedy, tonight's Rockies starter. In 13 career at-bats against him, Conine has nine hits, including two doubles and a homer, for a .692 average and 1.077 on-base plus slugging percentage. /---/ Sun-Sentinel Pierre on the homer... Asked before the game if his ex-Rockies teammates razzed him much about his lengthy homerless streak, Pierre said: "Nah, they knew I couldn't hit any home runs anywhere. Is it [that many] at-bats without a home run? Man, I didn't know that one." /---/ PB Post According to Joe Frisaro at MLB.com, the ball was not given to Pierre or the Marlins. On Coors and the Marlins' own stadium... Oh, there is one difference playing at Coors. "Maybe you don't bunt early," McKeon said. Of course, that would mean sacrifice bunts. The Marlins entered Tuesday's game tied with the Chicago Cubs for the Major League lead with seven bunt hits, and Pierre led off the game against the Rockies with a bunt hit to make it eight. /---/ MLB ''They've done a tremendous job in upgrading the area,'' McKeon said. ``It happened in Cleveland. It happened in Phoenix. It happened in San Diego. And it will happen in Florida if we ever get the stadium down there at the Orange Bowl.'' /---/ Herald Sun-Sentinel (Surely Sarah Talalay is holding back for her Sunday column) Herald PB Post The view from Denver... Jack Eitan profiles Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. If you recall, Rockies owner Charlie Monfort trashed Loria after the 2003 World Series over his front office turnover of 2001/2. Most of the quotes from this piece are recycled and act as a series preview more than anything else. Welcome back Juan The Rockies having trouble finding the right mix of rookies, has-beens and never-weres in their bullpen See more in the game recaps. "We were missing badly with pitches," pitching coach Bob Apodaca said. "That's how a close game turns into an ambush. Any decision we make will be well thought out." /---/ Denver Post Also of note... - Jamie Quirk, yes formerly of the Royals and Athletics, filled in for Clint Hurdle due to a viral infection. - Lenny Harris collected his first pinch-hit of the year. Six more to 200. - And if you care (and you should for the hilarity of Jack's comments), there's a glad-handing team chemistry and character piece here - Don't forget to check Fishstripes.com for Mike's series preview.
April 27, 200521 yr That quote by Beckett was HILARIOUS. "WRIGHT pretty much hit my bat with the pitch." :lol
