Posted May 12, 200519 yr Florida Marlins This is less unexpected than Johnson's breakout, but Jeremy Hermida is having a tremendous season in his Double-A inaugural. He is hitting .292/.453/.660 for the Carolina Mudcats, already having slammed 10 homers in 32 games. He also has 30 walks and 25 strikeouts. Walking once per game will do wonders for your on-base percentage. I predicted a breakthrough "if healthy" for Hermida in the book this year, and that is exactly what has happened. If he maintains this, he will be a Top Ten prospect on most 2006 lists, and possibly Top Five depending on what other players do. Hermida's teammate Scott Olsen, a lefty pitcher who needs more attention, is also having a breakout season: 4-1, 2.88, 50/12 K/BB in 41 innings, 32 hits allowed. Actually, "breakout" isn't the right description, as his numbers are very similar to what he did in the lower minors. But he's doing it in Double-A now, at age 21. Olsen is one of the best pitching prospects in the game and deserves much more press than he has received. I wouldn't be surprised to see him late in the second half. He could also be part of a stretch run trade. Either way we should be hearing more about him shortly.
