Question about baseball rules

Featured Replies

I was talking to one of the guys I work with about Monday's game and a question came up regarding rain outs.

On Monday, the Braves scored 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning. The Marlins didn't get to complete their half of the inning, yet the game was called and all stats from the 8th inning counted. This guy I work with used to be an umpire, and he swears that the rule is as follows:

"If an inning is not completed and a game is called, the final score of the game is determined by the last complete inning."

If this was the case, then the score should have been 3-1, Braves. Not that it affected the outcome of the game, but Julio Franco's grand slam wouldn't have counted, meaning he really didn't break his record from last year... And Messenger's ERA wouldn't have skyrocketed.

Does anyone know if this is the way it should have been called?

Being a former Softball umpire myself....that is what I thought the rule was....

that is an intresting point....that I hadn't thought about Monday's game

I sent the question to Baseball Digest as well. I'm curious what they have to say.. assuming they even address it.

That's supposed to be the rule.

Maybe MLB will change it later on, they do those things from time to time. It's not like it had an impact on the final outcome anyways because the Braves still won, so maybe that's why they were quick to count them.

Yeah, I guess, but as a Giants fan.... I know that the Marlins had a chance to make it close, cause Jim Brower came in to pitch.

And I really raised the question, beause I wonder how they would have handled it had the game been 3-2 or something. I'd hate to think that umpires or official scorers make calls based on the score.

Oh there's no question, if it was a two run lead going into the bottom of the inning, there's no way the Marlins let that game be called without them having batted after new runs came across the plate.
