Orioles: Griffey trade talk

The Baltimore Sun reports the Orioles are interested in acquiring Ken Griffey, Jr. from the Reds. The $79-million still owed Griffey over the final six years of his contract is, according to executive vice president Jim Beattie, not an obstacle. "From our point of view, we don't have anything holding us back," Beattie told The Sun. "We're trying to find the right match. Right now, a lot of clubs are saying, 'We're just going to wait.' So we're just trying to maintain conversations, let them know where our interests are." The Orioles are reportedly willing to part with pitcher Sidney Ponson and a couple prospects in exchange for Junior. The Reds probably wouldn't mind unloading his big salary, but for now general manager Jim Bowden says the team has no trade plans. "We've had no discussions about trading Ken Griffey Jr.," Bowden told the paper. "We plan on starting Opening Day at Great America Park with Ken Griffey in center field for the Reds."

All this trade talk ought to make an already gloomy Griffey even more sullen. The Reds certainly have enough young outfielders in their system, but trading him as they are set to open their new ballpark wouldn't be the best public relations move. Maybe they'll send him to Baltimore at the trade deadline in July.

WHEW! If they get griffey then we are talking. They will be big time better. They awuired Omar and now they might get griffey.

Ken has to go on and leave the reds...
