2005 Midseason Top 150 Prospects

 

 

1. Felix Hernandez - RHP Mariners - Age 19 - ETA: Sept. 2005

As minor as the problem was said to be, Hernandez?s recent absence due to shoulder bursitis was scary. The Mariners have probably been as careful with their 19-year-old as any team has ever been with a prospect, not even letting him throw his outstanding slider. With his mid-90s fastball, curveball and change, Hernandez still has plenty to retire major league hitters. Maybe he?ll get hurt despite the organization?s best efforts to protect him. However, it?s hard to imagine him not developing into a No. 1 starter if he stays healthy.

 

 

2. Delmon Young - OF Devil Rays - Age 19 - ETA: Aug. 2005

Young would top the rankings in most years. As is, he has to settle for the second spot behind the best pitching prospect to come along in several seasons. Skipping over the California League hasn?t slowed Dmitri?s brother down at all. In fact, he?s improved over his .322/.388/.538 line from the South Atlantic League last season. Young could join the Rays in August or September and he figures to receive every opportunity to win a starting job next spring. He?ll hit .300 with 40 homers in his best years, and since he likes to run, he might be a top-20 fantasy outfielder as soon as 2006.

 

 

3. Daric Barton - 1B Athletics - Age 19 - ETA: 2007

In his first season as a first baseman, Barton, who was drafted as a catcher by the Cardinals, has already moved up his ETA by a year, and it?s possible he could be ready to help the A?s by mid-2006. A slow start followed his spring training appendectomy, but he caught fire in June and is now playing well in Double-A. He has on-base skills to die for and developing power, so it hardly seems too early to suggest he?ll be one of the AL?s better hitters in his prime.

 

 

4. Andy Marte - 3B Braves - Age 21 - ETA: Apr. 2006

The Braves called on Marte twice while Chipper Jones was out, each time eventually realizing that Wilson Betemit was the better short-term option at third base. That?s not a strike against Marte, though. The native of the Dominican Republic will be ready to help the Braves next season, assuming that the club can find room for him. He has 30-homer power and he should be a .270-.280 hitter. His defense isn?t much better than average, so the Braves still could decide to move him to the outfield if they want to keep Jones at third base in 2006.

 

 

5. Joel Guzman - SS/3B Dodgers - Age 20 - ETA: June 2006

It comes as a bit of a disappointment that Guzman isn?t playing any better this year than he did after arriving in Double-A last season (.280/.325/.522 in 46 games). However, he?s still putting up impressive numbers for a 20-year-old infielder. Now back at his original position of shortstop after spending much of the first couple of months at third base, he seems less likely to help the Dodgers at the start of next year. Andy LaRoche hasn?t overtaken him as a prospect, but he could be the more ready of the two. Guzman, who still might end up in right field rather than somewhere in the infield, possesses superstar upside. He could become a Juan Gonzalez-type hitter.

 

 

6. Justin Verlander - RHP Tigers - Age 22 - ETA: Sept. 2005

Because of his command issues and his lack of progress while in college, Verlander, the second pick in the 2004 draft, didn?t appear in the top 150 in the preseason even though several players selected after him were listed. Now he?s surpassed all of them. His stuff was never in doubt, and adjustments the Tigers made to his delivery turned him into a consistent starter right from the time he made his pro debut in April. If his control keeps improving, his mid-90s fastball and hard curve will give him ace ability. Since he didn?t embarrass himself in his major league debut this month, he?ll be back on the mound for the Tigers before the end of the season.

 

 

7. Prince Fielder - 1B Brewers - Age 21 - ETA: April 2006

Fielder got a chance to show off his prodigious power in the majors last month, hitting his first homer in the same game as fellow top prospect Rickie Weeks. His Triple-A numbers haven?t been so impressive, but he has improved since a disappointing first two months and he could go on another tear at any time. What the Brewers will want to see before they decide to move Lyle Overbay is more consistency. Fielder will develop into a cleanup hitter and his glove is hardly so bad that it will force him to the AL anytime soon.

 

 

8. Jeremy Hermida - OF Marlins - Age 21 - ETA: April 2006

Hermida has blossomed as a power hitter even earlier than expected and appears nearly ready to help the Marlins. A left-handed hitter with a line-drive swing, he projects as a .300 hitter with 25-30 homer ability. He also runs the bases well, and he should develop into a quality defensive right fielder. He?s as safe of a bet as anyone in the rankings to become a quality regular, and he could go to All-Star Games in his prime. The Marlins should leave a spot open for him this winter.

 

 

9. Conor Jackson - 1B/OF Diamondbacks - Age 23 - ETA: April 2006

Jackson remains a liability on defense, but he?s such a gifted hitter that it doesn?t matter very much. A third baseman in college and a left fielder in his first year and a half as a pro, he?s now a first baseman. The hope is that he?ll become an adequate defender there. Jackson?s on-base ability is what really sets him apart. He could contend for batting titles in his prime and he?ll draw plenty of walks while doing so. That he has just six homers this year after finishing with 17 last season isn?t especially alarming, not when he?s leading the PCL in doubles. He?ll make Chad Tracy expendable this winter.

 

 

10. Matt Cain - RHP Giants - Age 20 - ETA: Aug. 2005

Cain?s ERA is well short of remarkable, but since he?s a 20-year-old in the Pacific Coast League, that was to be expected. A mid-90s fastball and an outstanding curve make him the National League?s top pitching prospect. His changeup is an average third pitch. It doesn?t look like the Giants are going to get back into the race, but it?s still very possible Cain will join the team?s rotation next month. He could be a No. 1 starter with an improved change and better command.

 

 

11. Ian Stewart - 3B Rockies - Age 20 - ETA: 2007

Stewart, who hit .319/.398/.594 for low Single-A Asheville in his first full pro season, missed much of spring training and then the entire month of April with a strained left hamstring. He struggled initially after joining Modesto?s lineup on May 1, but he?s picked up his numbers over the last month and a half. Stewart has just as much offensive potential as Andy Marte. He?ll probably be below average defensively, but he?ll stay at third base for several years after reaching the majors. He?d be a top fantasy prospect even without Coors Field in his corner.

 

 

12. Carlos Quentin - OF Diamondbacks - Age 22 - ETA: April 2006

It?s just as tough of a call as usual, but I?m going with Conor Jackson ahead of Quentin this time. Because of his trouble with inside fastballs, Quentin may have a tougher time adjusting to the majors than his teammate and fellow 2003 first-round pick. That?s not to say he can?t be a star given time. As a quality right fielder, Quentin does have an obvious defensive advantage. He also has the most home run power of the two. If things break right, he could have Moises Alou?s career.

13. Brandon Wood - SS Angels - Age 20 - ETA: 2007

Wood just squeaked into the preseason top 150 after hitting .251/.322/.404 in the Midwest League last season. Leading the minors in home runs has moved him up ever so slightly this time around. Playing in the California League has aided him, but Wood has 25-homer power and the ability to hit for average. There?s been speculation that he might need to move to third base, but he can be a fine shortstop if he avoids losing a step over the next couple of years. The Angels may have to find a spot for him in 2007.

 

 

14. Cole Hamels - LHP Phillies - Age 21 - ETA: May 2006

2-0, 2.25 ERA, 7 H, 18/7 K/BB in 16 IP for Single-A Clearwater

Judged strictly on talent, Hamels is probably the No. 2 pitching prospect in the minors. His injury history drops him in the rankings, but it looks like he?s managed to avoid rotator cuff or labrum damage to this point, and in the end, the fact that he?s thrown so few pitches before his 22nd birthday might help him out. Hamels works in the low-90s and possesses one of the best changeups in the minors, giving him ace ability. The Phillies haven?t ruled out calling him up during the final two months.

 

 

15. Stephen Drew - SS Diamondbacks - Age 22 - ETA: 2007

The younger brother of J.D. and Tim would have been ranked right around 60th in the preseason list had he signed with the Diamondbacks in time to qualify. Instead, he waited until just before he would have had to reenter the draft to agree to a five-year, major league contract. Since joining Single-A Lancaster, only a strained hamstring has been able to slow him down. Drew is probably going to be a center fielder rather than a shortstop. He doesn?t have J.D.?s offensive potential, but he?s not all that far off.

 

 

16. Casey Kotchman - 1B Angels - Age 22 - ETA: Aug. 2005

Until now, Kotchman has never stayed healthy and not hit. It can?t be just Triple-A that?s the problem, as he batted .372/.423/.558 in 199 AB for Salt Lake last season. Most likely, it?s not something that will last. Kotchman is just 22 and he entered the season with a line of .342/.423/.519 in 871 AB in the minors. He?s a top defensive first baseman, and if he ever overcomes the minor injuries that have plagued him, he has the potential to hit .310-.320 with 20-25 homers per year in the majors.

 

 

17. Andy LaRoche - 3B Dodgers - Age 21 - ETA: June 2006

LaRoche?s emergence has complicated the Dodgers? plans to stick Joel Guzman at third base. Although LaRoche started the year a level behind Guzman, he?s actually the older of the two and it now looks like he might be the first to reach the majors. The 2003 39th-round pick shows 35-40 homer power and he projects as a quality defensive third baseman. He may not get on base enough to be a star, but he?ll be more than the next Tony Batista.

 

 

18. Felix Pie - OF Cubs - Age 20 - ETA: Aug. 2006

Pie might already be patrolling center field for the Cubs if not for an ankle injury that has cost him a month. All things considered, the injury was probably well timed, as Pie is a year away from being ready for the majors. As long as he strikes out three times for every walk, he?s not going to be an upgrade over Corey Patterson. Pie has Johnny Damon-like potential, and he might even have enough power to be a No. 3 hitter in his prime.

 

 

19. Chad Billingsley - RHP Dodgers - Age 20 - ETA: July 2006

7-4, 4.28 ERA, 84 H, 105/32 K/BB in 90 1/3 IP for Double-A Jacksonville

 

Billingsley is finding Double-A a challenge, but he is steadily improving and his ratios have remained strong all season. The 2003 first-round pick throws 93-95 and both his curveball and slider can be plus pitches. It?s an arsenal that will allow him to overpower a healthy percentage of major league hitters when he?s on. He may have Edwin Jackson and Greg Miller to contend with when the Dodgers need a pitcher in mid-2006, but right now, he?s ahead of both.

 

 

20. Edwin Encarnacion - 3B Reds - Age 22 - ETA: Aug. 2005

Encarnacion has already gotten his first taste of the majors, and he could be up for good within a couple of weeks, assuming that Joe Randa is traded. A potential .280 hitter with 20-25 homer ability, the 22-year-old should develop into an above average regular. His defense is rough, but he?ll be a fine third baseman in time. Mike Lowell would seem to be his upside.

 

 

21. Billy Butler - OF Royals - Age 19 - ETA: 2007

Playing at High Desert in the California League has helped Butler?s numbers a great deal, but that the 2004 first-round pick is posting a 1066 OPS a year removed from high school is pretty remarkable. The Royals moved him from third base to left field last month. If he doesn?t have the range to stay there, he?ll give first base a try. He might end up as a long-term designated hitter. Anything to get his bat in the lineup as soon as possible. Butler could be a .300 hitter with 30-35 homer power. Given their situation, the Royals should resist the temptation to call on him before 2007.

 

 

22. Lastings Milledge - OF Mets - Age 20 - ETA: 2008

Milledge isn?t as much of a sure thing as the hitters above him on the list, but he has a great deal of potential. An outstanding athlete, he?s a true center fielder, and for someone who just turned 20 in April, he has a pretty good idea of what he?s doing at the plate. He should develop 20-homer power to go with his 30-steal ability, making him a top fantasy outfielder. He may not be as quick to develop as the Mets hope -- they?ve already been too aggressive by pushing him up to Double-A -- but if they can be more patient with him than the Cubs were with Corey Patterson, they figure to be rewarded.

 

 

23. Jered Weaver - RHP Angels - Age 22 - July 2006

3-1, 4.85 ERA, 24 H, 39/5 K/BB in 26 IP for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga

 

Weaver got off to a rough start after joining the Quakes, but given the one-year layoff, that wasn?t much of a surprise. He and the Angels went down to the wire before agreeing to a deal just before midnight on May 31. Weaver has pitched better of late, striking out 11 over six innings in his most recent start. He?s not going to be ready as soon as hoped, but he might fit into the Los Angeles rotation before the end of next year. Weaver throws in the low-90s and has four major league pitches. He figures to develop into a No. 3 starter.

 

 

24. Hanley Ramirez - SS Red Sox - Age 21 - ETA: July 2006

More was expected after Ramirez hit .310/.360/.512 in 32 games after arriving in Double-A last season. Still, he?s capable of turning it on at any time. Ramirez has tremendous physical ability. What the Red Sox are going to end up doing with him is an even bigger mystery now than it was when Edgar Renteria was signed. A move to center field to replace Johnny Damon was a popular thought, but the only position Ramirez has played other than shortstop is second base. He?s capable of developing into an All-Star no matter where Boston puts him. He?s probably not going to be ready for the start of 2006, but he could force his way into the lineup before the year is over.

25. Yusmeiro Petit - RHP Mets - Age 20 - ETA: May 2006

4-2, 2.93 ERA, 64 H, 83/12 K/BB in 73 2/3 IP for Double-A Binghamton

 

Definitely one of the most deceptive right-handers in professional baseball, Petit has outstanding minor league numbers despite average velocity. He throws 89-91 mph, possesses a couple of quality secondary pitches in his slider and changeup and has excellent command. Righties and lefties alike experience difficulty picking up the ball against him. Major leaguers may have more luck, lefties especially, so it?s hard to tell just how much upside he has. It would be a disappointment if he?s not at least a No. 3 starter. The Mets could create room for him during the first half of next year.

 

26. Adam Miller - RHP Indians - Age 20 - ETA: Aug. 2006

Miller, who was clocked at 101 mph at the end of last year, showed up this spring with a sore elbow and didn?t make his season debut until June 21. The injury remains a source of concern, but Miller is too talented to be dropped out of the top 30. He typically works at 95-97 mph and displays a sharp slider. The changeup he learned last year has potential. It?s possible his arm problems are here to stay, but if not, he?ll help the Indians before the end of next season.

 

 

27. Dustin Pedroia - 2B Red Sox - Age 21 - ETA: April 2006

Pedroia seems to have most convinced that he?s going to be a major league regular. His ceiling is still in doubt. The product of Arizona State lacks star potential, but his on-base skills should make him an above average player and an ideal No. 2 hitter. Pedroia could have stayed at shortstop despite a below average arm. Instead, he?s on his way to becoming an excellent defensive second baseman. The Red Sox are beginning to sour on Mark Bellhorn, so it wouldn?t be a surprise if Pedroia is in the starting lineup next April. He could be a better David Eckstein.

 

 

28. Chris Young - OF White Sox - Age 21 - ETA: 2007

Maybe the next Mike Cameron. Young is an excellent defensive center fielder with 25-30 homer power and frequent trouble making contact. The strikeouts can be overlooked up to a point, since he plays a premium defensive position and plays it well. He also draws quite a few walks and steals bases at a nice rate. That he?ll never hit for average will prevent him from becoming a star. He could still become a very valuable regular, though.

 

 

29. Joel Zumaya - RHP Tigers - Age 20 - ETA: June 2006

8-3, 2.77 ERA, 71 H, 143/52 K/BB in 107 1/3 IP for Double-A Erie

Zumaya stumbled last year in his first attempt at Double-A, but he was dominant in the Eastern League this year, ending speculation that he could be shifted to the pen. Zumaya throws in the mid-90s and displays a hard curveball. He needs a better changeup and improved command, but at age 20, he has plenty of time to learn. A candidate for arm problems, he does seem less likely to reach his ceiling than some of the pitchers ranked ahead of him. Still, he has No. 1-starter talent.

 

 

30. Wes Bankston - 1B Devil Rays - Age 21 - ETA: 2007

Bankston had wrist surgery in the offseason and knee surgery during the spring, but he?s been on fire since making his season debut on May 10, earning himself a quick promotion to Double-A in the process. The 2002 fourth-round pick is clearly the Rays? first baseman of the future after moving in from right field last year. He should have 25-30 homer ability by the time he reaches the majors. He?s less likely to be a .300 hitter, but he will draw walks. If the Rays don?t sign someone better than Travis Lee this winter, Bankston might break into the lineup by the All-Star break.

 

 

31. John Danks - LHP Rangers - Age 20 - ETA: June 2006

Danks still gets the nod as the Rangers? top pitching prospect. The 20-year-old has seen his ERA rise in Double-A, but his K/BB ratio remains very strong, keeping him ranked ahead of Thomas Diamond and Edison Volquez. Danks throws in the low-90s and he as a much improved changeup to go along with his excellent curveball. The talent is there for him to be a No. 2 starter.

 

 

32. Jeff Mathis - C Angels - Age 22 - ETA: Aug. 2006

Perhaps 2004?s biggest disappointment, Mathis has bounced back nicely, raising his OPS by about 160 points from where he finished in Double-A. Catchers tend not to develop offensively like other prospects, but in three of his four full pro seasons, Mathis has hit well while being young for his leagues. He?s an above average defensive catcher, so he?s going to be a major league regular. The when is harder to judge. The Angels will likely attempt to re-sign Bengie Molina in the offseason, and if he commands a multiyear deal, Mathis could become trade bait.

Pleased with John Buck behind the plate, the Royals made Huber a first baseman at the start of the spring. It looked like the former Mets prospect would start out at Triple-A Omaha, but with Ken Harvey also getting sent down, Huber was assigned to Double-A Wichita and, with the exception of an all-too-brief stint in the majors, has been stuck there ever since. If the Royals were trying to win, Huber would be their best option at DH. He?s not a true slugger, but his minor league OBP is approaching .400 and he does have 20-homer ability. He should have a long career as a regular at first base or DH.
