August 11, 200323 yr Author Lee praises his replacements By Juan C. Rodriguez Staff Writer Posted August 11 2003 MILWAUKEE ? First baseman Derrek Lee likely won't be in the lineup for today's series opener against the Dodgers at Pro Player Stadium. While he is committed to a speedy return from a sore shoulder, Lee doesn't anticipate the Marlins going south in his absence. Brian Banks has started at first and hit safely the past three games, including 2 for 4 in Sunday's 5-4 loss. Saturday, Banks drove in two runs with a first-inning single. "Banks has done a great job the last couple of days," Lee said. "I think we're fine. Yeah, I want to get back as quick as possible, but those guys are more than capable." Mike Mordecai and Andy Fox also have started at first base since Lee suffered a partial dislocation July 28 on a fielding play. Lee did not swing a bat on Sunday, but he will hit off a tee today. "The trainer is trying to quiet that thing down and not letting him do a lot," manager Jack McKeon said. "I'm not going to push it. If it means an extra day or two, that's fine as long as we get him back like he was before." Nobody on the roster is Lee's equal defensively or provides his power threat. But Banks believes the Marlins have enough on the bench to fill in regardless of how much time Lee might miss. Banks has some pop, and Fox and Mordecai are solid contact hitters. All three have been steady with the glove at first. If nothing else, Banks hopes the bump in playing time will carry over to his primary job. "To get a string of 10, 12 at-bats, you do get your rhythm going and get a little timing," said Banks, who logged as many at-bats the past three games as he did the previous 28 before Friday. "Hopefully when Derrek comes back I'll be able to take that same timing and the adjustments I've made to my pinch-hitting role and come up with some big hits."
