FLORIDA MARLINS

The truth is, Jack McKeon doesn't believe in call-ups. Now if somebody could call up a nice box of Cubans ... that he believes in.

Dontrelle? Cabrera? Hermida? I know the article was intended more as comedy than baseball journalism, but still... Jack had a rep for not liking younger players but that all changed when he came to the Marlins.

p.s. I kinda like the joke though :hat

Jack McKeon rarely plays youngsters unless his hand is forced. This hasn't changed.

- Cabrera played because our LF was producing below anything reasonable and injuries were happening all over.

- Willis played because of injuries to Redman, Penny, Beckett, and Burnett and onyl after we exhausted every crappy option available.

- Vargas and Olsen both came up only after injuries and weather conditions made it absolutely necessary. And this was after Leiter was released, Beckett got hurt, Castillo struggled, Valdez was still hurt, etc.

Just the facts.

Fair enough. But the "old" Jack probably would have traded all those youngsters for veteran fill-ins.

Well, Jack can't trade anyone since he's only the manager :)

Many of the young players that got playing time from Jack in Cincy in part because the Cincy's small payroll and injuries too.

As I've said in the past, it's somewhat of an admirable trait. Not in every situation though.

who is Leiter?

*trying to erase this from my memory* :plain
