Annoying someone via the Internet is now a federal crime.

 

It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.

 

In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name. Thank Congress for small favors, I guess.

Why does a country try to regulate the internet when it doesn't technically exist inside said country?

So the MB.com celebs are acting illegally now?

This can't be real. This reeks of first amendment violations. The website correctly points out that the term "annoy" is blatantly unconstitutionally vague. The use of aliases to write one's opinion is part of the fabric of our country. Publius, Brutus? I don't buy that this was actually passed. If it does, it won't take long to be struck down.

This has been confirmed as a real law, but there's no way it can be Constitutional. It's a clear 1st Amendment issue.
