The Arizona Diamondbacks signed a pair of right-handed pitchers, Brandon Lyon and Claudio Vargas, catcher Johnny Estrada and infielders Orlando Hudson and Alex Cintron to one-year contracts on Tuesday, thus avoiding arbitration.

Lyon, who missed almost the entire 2004 season after elbow surgery, struggled to an 0-2 mark with a 6.44 earned-run average and 14 saves as the closer last season and suffered another elbow injury that kept the right-hander out from May 13-Aug. 12.

The 26-year-old is 10-16 with a 5.19 ERA and 23 career saves in 107 MLB games, including 21 starts.

Vargas was claimed off waivers from Washington last June and finished 9-6 with a 4.81 ERA in 21 games (19 starts) for Arizona.

The 27-year-old has a 20-22 lifetime record with a 4.96 ERA in 93 games (57 starts).

The 29-year-old Estrada was acquired from the Atlanta Braves last Dec. 7 in exchange for pitchers Oscar Villarreal and Lance Cormier.

The catcher batted .261 with four HRs and 39 RBIs in 105 games with Atlanta last season and holds a .273 average with 21 HRs and 156 RBIs and in parts of five seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and Braves.

Hudson, 28, was brought over along with pitcher Miguel Batista in a trade that sent infielders Troy Glaus and Sergio Santos to Toronto.

The infielder batted .271 with 10 HRs and a career-best 63 RBIs in 131 games.

The 2005 Gold Glove winner has batted .270 with 35 HRs and 201 RBIs in four MLB seasons.

The 26-year-old Cintron appeared in 122 games with Arizona last season, hitting .273 with eight HRs and 48 RBIs.

Cintron has spent all five seasons with Arizona, batting .279 with 25 HRs and 152 RBIs.
