Marlins acquired first baseman-outfielder Jeff Conine from the Orioles for RHP Denny Bautista and RHP Don Levinski.

The Marlins needed the bat, but they got ripped off badly here. Conine is a league-average player who just happened to be in a very good situation this year. The Brewers may be saying they don't want to trade John Vander Wal, but they would have changed their minds if Bautista alone was offered, and that trade would have saved the Marlins $5+ million and Levinski, and would have supplied them with an excellent left-handed bat to break up their heavily right-handed lineup. Conine will spend the rest of this season as the team's left fielder and will probably move into the cleanup spot. In 2004, he'll likely take over as the team's first baseman, meaning Derrek Lee will have to be traded or non-tendered.
