Posted April 7, 200619 yr CINCINNATI -- The call was originally wrong, but credit the umpires for ultimately getting it right. With runners on first and second and two outs, the Reds' Adam Dunn hit a soft liner to center field that appeared to be trapped on a short hop by Pittsburgh's Chris Duffy. Third-base umpire Bruce Dreckman ruled it a catch and the third out. But as the Pirates left the field, Reds manager Jerry Narron argued the call. An umpire conference resulted in a reversal. Dunn was credited with an RBI single, and pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia was allowed to score from second base. It was the difference maker in a 6-5 Cincinnati victory in Thursday night's series opener before 13,887 fans at rainy Great American Ball Park. Pirates skipper Jim Tracy was ejected after arguing the call reversal. However, television replays clearly showed that Duffy had indeed trapped the ball. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit had tied the game with a two-run homer to right field off reliever Rick White (1-0). Pinch-hitter Edwin Encarnacion broke a 3-3 tie with two outs in the fifth by rolling an RBI single up the middle. Dunn's booming 479-foot home run to right-center field in the sixth made it a two-run game. Brandon Claussen started and gave Cincinnati five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Claussen gave up a game-tying three-run homer to Joe Randa in the fourth inning. Pittsburgh's Ian Snell worked five innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Mike Gonzalez (0-1) took the loss for giving up Dunn's single. David Weathers pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. To give you an idea of how far Dunn's homer actually went.......... See the smoke stacks in right center field? Dunns ball split them right down the middle, went over them, and went out of the stadium to a road behind it. it hit a mans car! It was deep! 2-1 I'll take it! Go Reds!
April 7, 200619 yr Dunn has some serious pop. Be interesting to see his HR total at the end of his carrer.
