Padres demote Brady Anderson to Triple-A

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres assigned veteran outfielder Brady Anderson to Triple-A Portland and granted outfielder Roberto Kelly his unconditional release on Thursday.

Both players came to the Padres' major league camp with minor league contracts and an opportunity to win spots on the team's major league roster. Anderson, however, accepted the Triple-A assignment, while Kelly asked for and was granted his release rather than return back to the minor leagues.

Anderson has not played in the majors since being released by Cleveland on May 21 of last season. He was hitting just .163 with one home run and five RBI in 34 games in 2002. The 38-year-old Anderson was raised in the San Diego area.

A .256 career hitter, Anderson also has 210 homers and 761 RBI in 1,834 games with Boston, Baltimore and Cleveland. He spent the majority of his career with the Orioles and in 1996 he belted 50 homers with 110 runs batted in.

Kelly has not played in a major league game since the 2000 season when he was with the New York Yankees. The 38-year-old Kelly played in only 10 games with the Yankees that season.

Over his 14-year major league career, Kelly has a career .290 average with 124 home runs and 585 RBI. Kelly has played with the Yankees, Reds, Braves, Expos, Dodgers, Twins, Mariners and Rangers.

The Padres kept only five outfielders on the roster, including Shane Victorino, who must remain on the big league roster for the entire season or be offered back to the Dodgers, his former team.
