September 30, 200323 yr mlb.com SAN FRANCISCO -- With National League Wild Card implications on the line, Marlins closer Ugueth Urbina delivered four saves in the final week to clinch the second postseason appearance in franchise history. Urbina's heroics earned him NL Player of the Week honors. Of late, Urbina (3-0, 1.41) stepped up after Braden Looper struggled in September. Moving from setup to closer, Urbina completed the season with six saves in eight chances with the Marlins. He had 26 saves before the All-Star break while with the Rangers. The Marlins acquired Urbina from Texas on July 11 for three minor leaguers. Last week, Urbina closed out a 6-3 win over the Braves at Atlanta on Sept. 22. He then had two straight saves in one-run wins in a decisive series with the Phillies. When the Marlins clinched the Wild Card Friday night, it was Urbina in the ninth inning getting Roger Cedeno of the Mets to fly out to center fielder Juan Pierre with runners on first and third. The hair-raising save gave the Marlins a 4-3 win over New York, setting off a joyous celebration after the final out was recorded. "When I first got here, I knew this team had all the tools," Urbina said. "Now we proved it." In those four games, he didn't allow a run in four innings. Many Marlins view the trade for Urbina as one of the turning points of the season. In the past, the team was used to seeing quality veterans being dealt around the All-Star break. This year, an established reliever was acquired. General manager Admin Beinfest is credited with pulling the trigger on the deal that helped swing the Wild Card in the Marlins' favor. "We looked at what the team needed," Beinfest said. "We needed an additional arm in the bullpen. We thought, 'Let's give them that part they are definitely missing.'" Pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal is impressed by Urbina's intensity and confidence. "Look at his face when he's pitching," Rosenthal said. "Look at his eyes. He's got that look like he's not going to get beat. Nothing fazes him. He's very aggressive. You get the feeling you're going to win the game. You have to have that intensity and fire."
