Look at the ratings for each drive, depending on the size and type of drive you are looking for. No brand has solid performance across their entire product line. Seagate built their reputation on SCSI, for example, while Western Digital was carving a niche in IDE.

 

Now that SATA drives are out, it's every company for themselves...

Lacie. The cheapeast reliable brand name on the market IMO. I have the 250 external HD and it works great. No overheating, not too loud and does the trick.
