Short Story

Featured Replies

I wrote a short story (in about the span of 10 minutes) and I wanted to share it with you guys. Since there is a slight spoiler in the title, the title will be posted at the bottom of the post in bold. Let me know what you guys think, but bear in mind that this was just something I did really quick.

Here I am. I'm on stage at last. They'd told me I'd end up here eventually, but I never believed them. I thought I was too far below the radar to get noticed, but I caught somebody's eye. Hell, judging by the crowd that showed up, I'd say I caught a lot of people's eyes. Wow. Look at that crowd. There must be at least three hundred people out there to see me. Many of them seem to be talking amongst themselves about what they'd heard of me. A few hecklers out there are shouting insults at me, but the majority of them seem to be in a hush, waiting for the hour of my performance.

It's almost time. I can tell because the light above is getting really bright, making it difficult to see the crowd. The light really warm too. I'm starting to sweat from the heat of it. Oh, man. I'm really nervous now. I'm biting my lower lip and my hands are all clamy. Looking up with my eyes closed tight, I pray to God to please help get me through this. The man in charge of the show walks over and tells me it's time. I bit my lip and nod my head.

After making some last minute checks and peparations, he tightens the noose around my neck. He quietly asks me if I have any last requests. "Just pray for me," I say. He tells me he will. He walks over to a lever and the crowd goes silent. Although it's only a few seconds, the slience feels like an eternity. It's one last moment to think about everything done. One last moment to say my final prayers. The signal is given from a distance without sound. The man nods, pulls the lever, and watches as I plummet through the trap door in the stage.

And with a snap, I gave my final performance. A show that they would never forget.

High Noon

As performed by Saddam Hussein.

:lol Actually, it was meant as an old west story, but if you like it better with Hussein, then by all means, imagine him.

I thought it was good. I think you could have made it a lot more suspenseful, and totally surprise the reader at the end, but it was well written.

does the copyright at the end mean i can't submit this one to a literary competition?

It means I own the rights to it. I don't mind you using it for stuff, I want to be credited for it. I'm going to start going over the stuff I write, making corrections, proof reading, touch up, etc, and then submitting stuff for publishing.

No. Just make sure I'm credited for it, that's all.

That was absolutly brilliant. Could use some some fine tuning though. The moment of revealing it was a hanging could have been more dramatic.

Thank you. As I said, I did it in about the span of 10 minutes. I'm going to flesh it out a bit and fine tune it some more.
