General Manager Former Ottawa GM Brings Wealth of NHL Experience and Knowledge to Organization January 26, 2007 SUNRISE, Fla. ? Florida Panthers head coach and general manager Jacques Martin announced today that the club has hired Randy Sexton as the team?s Assistant General Manager. ?After a comprehensive interview process I am very pleased to have hired Randy,? Martin said. ?He brings to our organization an enormous wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas of both hockey and business operations. He possesses a keen understanding of the various elements that are required to direct a successful organization both on and off the ice. In his new role, Randy will assist me with the day-to-day duties in the hockey operations department, that include overseeing our scouting department, conducting contract negotiations and handling all CBA related matters.? The Brockville, Ontario native spent eight years (1988-1996) with the Ottawa Senators organization serving as the club?s president, chief executive officer and general manager. During his tenure the Senators achieved enormous success and profitability in all areas of hockey and business operations. Sexton, 47, directed the contract negotiations and signing of Alexei Yashin, the club?s first round pick in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, as well as Radek Bonk, Ottawa?s first choice in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Under his tenure, he was also responsible for acquiring several other star NHL players that included Martin Straka, Steve Duchesne and Jaroslav Modry. ?I am extremely grateful to have this opportunity afforded to me,? Sexton said. ?Jacques is a man of high integrity who I believe in. I look forward to working with him and our entire staff as we establish a winning tradition for the Panthers organization.? Sexton joins the Panthers after spending the last three years as the Executive Director of Capital Sports Management Inc. (CSMI), a sister company to the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club. While with CSMI, Sexton provided strategic analysis and advice to the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club. Sexton completed his post-secondary education at St. Lawerence University, playing for the varsity hockey team from 1978-1982. He served as team captain during his final two seasons, earning numerous awards including All-American honors, Senior Male Athlete of the Year, Most Valuable Player and the Brian P. Doyle Award. From 1983-1985 he served as an assistant coach with St. Lawrence, while also handling scouting and recruiting responsibilities. He earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Clarkson University. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- a clarkson AND St. Lawerence guy...grrr! But he will be a very good assistant GM. I am confused as to why Jacques didn't hire him as GM so he could move to only coaching.
January 27, 200718 yr FINALLY. a real GM. the only reason Jaques is still co-GM is so he has final say. you may or may not be aware that the last GM we had f***ed over the team pretty good.
January 27, 200718 yr Author you may be right, but at the same time, this is a REAL GM and he has trust with Jacques...I could see him wanting final say, but i just think that having the title GM on him is too much for him
