Fish not about to surrender

Having backs against wall nothing new for Florida

MIAMI -- The Marlins know the wall well. They've spent so much of the season against it, they qualify to be a mural.

The Florida Murals were 10 games below .500 before Memorial Day, and became the fifth team in a quarter-century to recover from that depth to reach the postseason.

 

They overcame devastating injuries -- to A.J. Burnett, to Mike Lowell. They overcame the Phillies. They overcame embarrassment; nine times they were buried under double-digit avalanches, and won the next day on seven occasions.

 

This is a team built for recoil, with spring in its step.

 

A 3-games-to-1 deficit in the National League Championship Series? Hello, wall. The Marlins simply use that wall for leverage.

 

Good luck to the Cubs driving that last nail in their coffin.

 

"We always play good at home," Florida second baseman Luis Castillo said following Saturday night's 8-3 Game 4 defeat, embracing one more Pro Player Stadium opportunity to get the Marlins back on track. "Tomorrow, we got to start doing it."

 

"This was a tough loss. It was a big game for us," first baseman Derrek Lee said. "We've dug ourselves a hole, for sure. But it's not over. We've got to keep fighting, keep going."

 

No one knows better where fighting on can lead than Jack McKeon. The Marlins' manager was a suit, the general manager, when the 1984 San Diego Padres overcame a 2-0 deficit in a five-game NLCS to the ... Cubs.

 

Asked whether that might provide one of his pre-Game 5 messages, McKeon said, "I might bring it up. It would be a good story."

 

"It's a seven-game series, and it's a big challenge," McKeon went on. "But there's a lot of clubs that came back. We're not out. We're going to be battling tomorrow."

 

For sure, they hope not to again have to battle back from a first-inning deficit. The Game 1 comeback from four runs down in the first to a 9-8 victory was heady stuff.

 

But those instant deficits have gotten old. The Cubs have scored in the first inning of each game, a total of 11 runs.

 

"That's no way to start a game," Lee said. "But we've been there before, and come back. Someone would do a good job on the mound, and give us a chance to come back in the game.

 

"We couldn't keep that momentum going tonight."

 

"They've scored in the first inning every game, and that's tough," said Lowell, who returned to the Marlins' starting lineup, dislocating rookie Miguel Cabrera to right field.

 

"We've been swinging the bats pretty good. I know we only got three runs, but we hit the ball pretty good. But when we get down like that, our brand of baseball kinda changes.

 

"We put pressure on guys by running, but when we're down big, we can't do that. We can't take the chance of running into outs."

 

The burden of stopping that trend falls to right-hander Josh Beckett, who began it in his Game 1 start.

 

"We hope to get a good performance out of Josh," Lowell said, "and score more runs than they do, and move on."We've dug a helluva hole for ourselves. But we'll play tomorrow, and see what we can do to win and move on to Game 6 (Tuesday in Chicago).

 

"We can't look at it as having to win three in a row. We just have to win tomorrow. We have to take it slowly, one a day. But it's tough. Our backs are against the wall."

 

Yes, that old familiar feeling. Doesn't it provide some comfort?

 

Lowell shook his head. "I'm not a big believer in your track record during the season affecting what happens in the postseason. We're down three-to-one; if we don't win tomorrow, the season's over.

 

"We've got to focus on that one before we look past it. But we're confident of being able to do it."

 

That proven track record of resiliency did provide some comfort to Dontrelle Willis, whose 2 1/3 erratic innings placed the Marlins in this predicament.

 

"We still have tomorrow," Willis said. "I hope we win, go back to Chicago and I get to pitch again. And I hope next time, I will be sharper."

 

In baseball, as in any other sport, momentum is a very real, powerful force.

 

But the beautiful thing about baseball is that momentum can switch with one pitch, with one batter, with one inning.

 

And you don't have to wait long for the chance to throw that switch. A few hours after Game 4, it will be Game 5 and a new blank canvas.

 

"We have to keep the same approach," Lee said, "keep playing hard, try to swing the bats a little better.

 

"And we just have to worry about tomorrow. We've gotta get back in it tomorrow. We've got to take it game by game. We've got to win one game just to get to the next one."

One game at a time. One inning at a time. One batter at a time. One pitch at a time. One moment at a time. We have got to slow this game down, and take control. If any team in the playoffs is primed to come back in a series like this, it is these Marlins who were 10 games below .500 at one point. Remember, we were not supposed to be here. No one gave us a chance. And no one is giving us a chance now. We have got to root for this team and believe even more now than before because the rest of the world wants to see the Cubs in the WS. Believe in your team. Believe in miracles - it will happen. :mischief

the only good thing about them not winning the pennant is that i would save money on World Series tickets, and NL Championship merchandise... ah hell, f*** this, go get me closer to chapter 11 MARLINS!!!!!
