Marlins grab another Independent League player

Recommended Posts

Schaumburg, IL - Schaumburg Flyers' veteran infielder Eric Riggs is heading back to affiliated baseball. Just two games into the 2007 Northern League season, the Florida Marlins purchased the contract rights of Eric Riggs. Riggs started at shortstop in the Flyers' two games and is 4-9 (.444) with four runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. The Marlins are sending Riggs to the AA Carolina Mudcats (Southern League)."Obviously, the goal is to get back into organizational ball," said the new Marlins prospect. "Its tough to leave this team when we are just starting to gel. You can't judge much from two games, but it felt like we were coming together on the field and in the clubhouse."

The Mudcats play at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. The team is currently playing a series in Jacksonville, FL and returns home on Tuesday.

Riggs is no stranger to an early season move from independent professional baseball to organizational ball. The Los Angeles Dodgers released Riggs after 2005 so he signed with the Winnipeg Goldeyes and began preparations for 2006. One day before Winnipeg was due to open the season, the Dodgers came calling for Riggs who went on to hit .300 for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s.

"Honestly, I always knew it was a possibility," admitted manager, Steve Maddock. Maddock was on the 2006 coaching staff in Winnipeg when Riggs left for the Dodgers AAA affiliate before the season began. "He had a great year last year and has experience at the AAA level. So if there was an opening in Double-A or Triple-A, I knew he'd get a look. As much as we wanted him on our team, we're happy for him."

You look at the Mudcats and you have to wonder why? Maybe something else is in the works...just guessing.
