Top 2b prospects: Baseball Prospectus

4. Chris Coghlan, Marlins

Age: 22.1

Hitting: .325/.419/.534 at Low-A (81 G); .167/.280/.262 at High-A (12 G)

Coghlan was selected in the pick just prior to Cardenas, and also did not become a second baseman this year, as he played third in college. On both an athletic and a baseball level, Coghlan fits better at second, as he?s no a power hitter, but is instead more of a line-drive type with plus speed and enough strength to occasionally sting a ball over the fence. Defensively, he?s still struggling at the new position, particularly on balls hit up the middle and on turning the double play, but the organization believes he?ll become an average defender by the time he?s ready for the majors.

good stuff, would be nice if he could hit in Jupiter though (just a few games, I realize...)

Seems to me that the padres should just take a chance with this guy and show him the BIGS

He's barely out of A ball

you don't do that to positional players (and rarely will it ever work with pitchers)

that and they like Kouz out there in SD

Hes a 2nd Baseman, Kouz is a 3rd basemen. Giles as been stinking up the place. Give this guy another week or two in AA and see if he is still hitting the ball at his current pace. If he is, send him to AAA or MAJORS. There is no point having your best option in the minors!

He has 44 AB's in double A, don't go crazy over the guy, let him develop in the minors first and see what happens. Plus they're contending for the playoffs, Giles is more valuable as a vet with experience.

.236 average, .306 OBP, .333 slugging.

Rumor has it that that is not very valuable to a contending team.

whenever Geoff Blum is stealing starts from you, you know your in trouble

first of all, my bad with Kouz.... Antonelli was drafted as a 3b and just recently moved to 2b

secondly, you don't rush a positional prospect with just 50 AA at bats

even Cabrera got 250 at bats in Carolina
