I recently saw The Hudsucker Proxy and it got me thinking on what movies have great sets. Some of these movies might have the sets upstage the action and characters (but not always). I'll add some more later.

Gangs of New York

Big Fish

The Hudsucker Proxy

The Aviator

Ben-Hur

Blade Runner

Big Fish, Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Pee Wee's Big Adventure (really unheralded).

In the non-Tim Burton category

Gladiator, Kill Bill and Ben Hur

Lets try to stay away from CGI-created sets because you know... the unfair advantage of it not being really there. :o

and 3:10 to Yuma had a great set in the last third of the movie. Although there are a ton of Westerns that do the old country justice (Wyatt Earp, Quick and the Dead, etc)

As far as interiors go (in no order):

Barry Lydon

Fanny and Alexander

The Last Emperor

It's nice to have the Forbidden City at your disposal.
