Where does our system rank overall

Featured Replies

It seems as if we have all of these great pitchers always coming out of our system and yet they are never ranked very high. Is there a negative bias against the marlins farm system. While looking at overall rankings it seems like the Marlins never have many top ranked prospects. Whats the deal?

I read on another board that baseballamerica ranked our system as the 17th best minor league system and that other than Maybin we didn't have any blue chip prospects and that the young pitchers you're referring to haven't progressed as expected. Another of the minor league sites recently rated the systems and ranked us around 20th based on how close our minor leaguers are to the majors. I don't think it's a bias against the Marlins. I think it's that Marlins fans waaaay overrated our prospects. Just the other day a scout was quoted in the Herald saying that Volstad is our best prospect and I think he said he projected as a No. 3 starter.

To shed a little light that might explain some of this #1 vs. #3 vs #5 starter.

No1 No2 No3 No4-5 starters

Two plus pitches Two plus pitches One plus pitch Command of two major league pitches

Average third pitch Average third pitch two average pitches average velocity

Plus-plus command Average command average command consistent breaking ball

Plus make-up Average make-up average makeup decent change up

I think if you read these descriptions it kind of better explains where these guys get grouped. No1 starters are basically perennial All-Stars. I think that there are teams out there that technically have no true #1's. The White Sox have Mark Buerhle who is their #1 pitcher but he probably rates as a #3 on this prospect ranking system. Barry Zito - same scenario. The Sox traded Jon Garland who didn't miss a start for like 4 years, ate up a lot of innings, pitched in a hitter friendly park and in my opinion was our best pitcher. However, he is a sinker ball pitcher who throws to contact and never accumulates a lot of strike outs. Scouts generally like to rag on these kinds of guys - but to me - he was a great pitcher for the Sox. Now, all he is gonna do in '08, is win 18 games in Anaheim and the Sox will be lucky to get a guy to 14 wins IMO.

Sorry
