What does everyone think about...

If you look at Waechter's starts with the Rays, one of two things usually happened

1) He stayed focused, kept the ball low in the strike zone (and kept the ball in the park) and had a pretty good game only to let the bullpen blow up or

2) He would go through the line-up 1-2 times, lose his focus and let the ball get up in the strike zone and get knocked around a little bit.

It is hard to say how he would handle being a starter because he is throwing the ball much harder than he was the last few seasons with the rays because his shoulder is healthy, and he was pitching in the American League. I know some of you don't think that matters, but having to face David Ortiz instead of a pitcher does make a difference.

I'd say it is a toss up. He isn't a bad option to have in the pen for long relief or even to make a spot start for a double header or something. And I don't think he is a bad option for a 4-5 pitcher either.

Just to note...

When I started this topic, I never suggested anyone be removed from the rotation. Obviously if we gave Waechter a shot, then someone would have to be moved into the pen, but it wasn't just because of Badenhop's bad start that I suggested the move. It only has to do with Waechter performing quite well. I also never suggested that he would be an ace for us. I know his track record and if he was put in the rotation I wouldn't expect ace-like numbers. But, I do believe he could perform better than our other 4th or 5th starters have this year. We shall see, I don't think this move will be made, I was just throwing out a thought.

I'm sure Fredi has already thought about throwing him into the rotation. The only reason I believe he hasn't done it is because there really isn't a reason to panic. We're still in first place despite some bumps the last 7 games. This move will gain more merit if and when the Marlins approach .500.
