He has thrown a lot of scoreless innings. It sure would be nice to get 6 or 7 solid innings every fifth day.

He's throwing like that because he can be more max-effort and the batters don't get multiples views of him, though he's probably next in line to start... just don't expect him to be a savior

I'm not expecting a savior, just some more quality starts.

There may be a (health) reason it hasn't been tried. Ot it just might be a belief on the part of Fredi and his staff that Waechter who works best when he only has to go through a lineup once. Just guessing.

I think it's certainly worth one start, especially considering how Miller and Badenhop can't seem to get it done.

Where have you been through Miller's past few starts? He's been fine... ad he's been getting better, everyone has the itchy trigger finger when it comes to these guys... :banghead

Nolasco was excellent in Waechter's role, as well.

What makes you think Waechter would give us consistent quality starts?

I think Badenhop has the stuff, and for those still hating on Miller...the guy's ERA is in the low 2's, in May.

I'd rather see Nolasco go to the pen and Badenhop sent down. Nolasco seems to be hit harder the second time through the line-up. H emay be more efffecting in shorter appearances. Badenhop needs some work in the minors. Miller seems to be improving, I'd leave him where he is.

Exactly. How many people were calling for Miller to be demoted 4 starts ago? You have to use patience with these guys and allow them to learn while they pitch at the big league level. I think the organization has handled the rotation perfectly under the circumstances. If Badenhop has another rough outing his next time out, I garuntee there will be shouts of AA or bullpen assignment and a demand of Weachter for the rotation. Exercise some patience, you don't have to make a drastic move every time something goes wrong.

You'd think we were Red Sox/Yankees fans

I've never been a big fan of Nolasco and I'm still inclined to think he is destined for the bullpen. Unlike Miller and Badenhop, we've seen a fair bit of Nolsco and he hasn't impressed. However, his ERA is not terrible right now and he has been the equivalent of a mediocre number 5 starter. For now, keep him in the rotation until a better option is available or he can't keep it together, in which case swap in Waechter.

I agree with 30plus...I'm all for being patient with the young pitchers.

Look at Miller: TERRIBLE April; wonderful May.

Badenhop has a great sinker...he's going through some growing pains at the ML level, but before today's start, the last 3 starts or so, he had given us a chance to win.

At some point the organization needs to make a decision. If the team is still over .500 and still near the top of the pack in June, does the team stick with the young arms that are struggling and stay in rebuilding mode or do you bring in starting pitching help and make a run for post-season? Granted we have a few arms coming off DL later this season, but they are not gonna be lights out right away and may need some minor league rehab starts.

SP is hard to come by; really, the only thing I can think of right now, is maybe Greg Maddux? But the Braves have already expressed interest, and I'm sure Maddux would like to end his career with Glavine and Smoltz.

It woud really ruin him. Keep him in the BP, he wouldnt be as bad as some of our starters have been, but its not like you will get an ace out of him just because of his relief numbers.

True. I think the team's early success this season is gonna really have to force the FO to make a decision as to whether or not they will Stand Pat or be Buyers... The team shouldnt sell the future but at the same time I think our guys should get some help and be rewarded for how they have been overall so far this year.

I don't understand why everyone wants Badenhop gone after one bad start on a day in which he had the deck stacked against him. It's one bad start. Bumps in the road happen. I'd rather not mess with his head to get a journeyman who has no future whatsoever with this organization into the rotation just because he has been decent at times this year out of the pen.

Because Badenhop is struggling. We are approaching June when teams decide if they are gonna push for post-season or not. The Marlins are still in first. Do you want Badenhop to cost us games right now or have him develope in the minors? I'd rather have someone pitch that has a chance to give this team the win. Although his stats are slightly better, at least Miller is showing signs of turning the corner (but if he struggles in his next few starts he needs to go down too). If the Marlins sucked right now and were in the basement then I would have no problem throwing Badenhop out there every 5 games.

How, before today (his first afternoon start at home), had he been costing us games? In his three starts previous, he got to the 6th and didn't give up more than 3 runs. That's called keeping your team in a game and giving them a chance to win. The last time Waechter was in a rotation, he had a 6.64 ERA in 53 IP before being demoted to Tampa's AAA team. He's effective as the long relief guy when guys get at the most 2 looks at him per game. Leave him there. In contention or not, I'd much rather keep developing Badenhop's arm then bringing in a journeyman vet with a history of struggles.

It's funny, the comment "Badenhop is struggling" hadn't be spoken in a while before this afternoon. He's doing fine. It was a bump in the road. Hold that jerky knee steady.

What is your definition of fine?

Here is Andrew's.. his last 3 starts have been good but he isnt much better overall...

Now, here is the question... Is the team gonna "go for it" and make a run for October? If not, then fine play them both and let them learn from mistakes and mature; I have no issue in that case. If this team is going for it, these kids needs to learn in AA and then get called up when they are ready to contribute more; I'd rather have a journeyman with experience give this team a chance if the team is making a run.

Here is Rotoworld.com's take:

Burke Badenhop lasted just three innings against the Royals on Sunday afternoon, surrendering six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and a walk.

Badenhop fell to 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA. He belongs in the minors, but there's still the matter of finding a replacement for him. Chris Volstad could be an alternative soon.

I think it's certainly worth one start, especially considering how Miller and Badenhop can't seem to get it done.

I plead guilty. Miller is using his change up alot better the past few starts. It looks like he is settling into his role. My main problem was he was getting hammered consistently. And I believe that rookies have the advantage over hitters for the first couple times through a line up and the first time or two facing teams. (Which is one reason I am against rookie pitchers winning the ROY, even DTrain.) He was the exception. They were just pounding him from start to finish. Couple that with him acknowledging he was hurt (leg injury), and I was all for sending him down. Rookies have a tendency to adjust their throwing style to compensate for injuries and then injuring themselves even worse. Leg injuries + compensation = shoulder and/or elbow injuries.

But that is why I am posting on sports boards and not coaching or managing in the majors. And why I deserve a quick kick in the Steinbrenner for ever questioning Coyote. Not that I won't do it again, because I most likely will.

Badenhop has pitched well enough to win in three of his last four starts. That's my definition of fine. He's not going anywhere.
