November 1, 200322 yr Toilet call paralyses transport network Fri Oct 31, 1:00 PM ET Add U.S. National - AFP to My Yahoo! NEW YORK (AFP) - The moral of the story is simple. If you drop your mobile phone into the toilet bowl ... just walk away. Edwin Gallart chose the unwise retrieval option and left thousands of commuters on New York's Metro-North railroad network stranded as a result. Gallart, 41, was travelling home on the Harlem Line local train on Wednesday evening when he visited the bathroom and dropped his cellphone into the toilet. Proprietary pride got the better of revulsion and he reached into the bowl, only for his arm to become securely trapped from hand to elbow. Passengers, hearing his shouts for help, alerted railway staff who, unable to free Gallart themselves, called in firefighters who were forced to rip out the toilet completely and then slice it open in order to free the hapless passenger. During the lengthy rescue operation, trains had to be held up and re-routed, causing delays for thousands of rush hour commuters. "It cost our customers a long, convoluted commute, and it cost this railroad many thousands of dollars," Dan Brucker, a spokesman for Metro-North, told the New York Times. As for the phone, it was never recovered, somewhat to the relief of Al Cecere, the Harlem Line facilities director. "You wouldn't want to put that on your face afterwards anyway," Cecere said.
November 1, 200322 yr amazing i wonder where that mofo would rank on the "worlds stupidest people" list. I personally would be to embarassed to show my face again on any train if they had to cut me out of a s*** filled toilet after i tried to get my Cell Phone.
