Jamestown downed Batavia, 1-0 this evening at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia. Batavia had 10 hits but zero runs. There was a young guy video taping certain Jamestown players at-bats. He taped most of them, but didn't tape Ernesto Manzanillo or Erik Kanaby. Batavia had a lefty on the mound for the first 6 1/3 innings. As I've done in the past, here are my amateur scouting reports on the players:

LF Erik Kanaby (3rd year player; signed as a free-agent, formerly of the Dodgers organization; played for Great Lakes of A League last year): Kanaby went 1-3 with two walks and a stolen base (though a good throw might've had him). He's a well-built kid and in the seventh inning, he reached on an error when the pitcher bobbled his bunt- it was bunted right to the mound. In the field, he let a shallow fly ball drop, then got the force out at second as the runner on first had to go half-way. Then, he got another assist when a Muckdog player, on a hit-and-run, went to second but the ball was a fly ball to left. Kanaby caught it but the guy just stayed on second rather than going back to first, so it was an easy play. He had a couple good at-bats.

2B Michael Pasek (17th round draft pick in 2007; played for GCL and Jamestown last season): Pasek hit only .202 for GCL last year, where he spent the majority of the season. At 5'9", he looks really tiny at the plate. He was 1-5 with three strikeouts against Batavia. He didn't look too good at the plate.

3B Chase Austin (5th round pick, 2009): Austin had five errors in 10 games this season while learning 3B, but he wasn't bad tonight. In fact, he made a diving stop to rob a runner of extra bases and hold him to an infield single. Austin went old-fashioned, sporting no batting gloves at bat. He's got good size and has a lot of room to fill out. He went 2-4 with a strikeout. One of his singles was a nubber down the first-base line. The pitcher and first basemen both went to field it; the pitcher got it cleanly, but ran into the first basemen on his way to the bag. And after the second single, he got picked off at third base from across the diamond by the first basemen after Sequoyha Stonecipher reached on an error.

1B Ricky Orton (29th round pick, 2008; spent last season in GCL): Orton hit .246 in GCL last season. He's a big lefty (6'4") at the plate and went 1-3 with a K and a BB. He worked three at-bats to a 3-2 count and showed good patience, not surprising since he had 22 BBs and 27 Ks last year. He also scored the lone run of the game. Didn't need to make any plays defensively really.

RF Sequoyah Stonecipher (14th round pick, 2009): Stonecipher went 1-4 with a double and he reached on an error by the pitcher on a bunt attempt. In the field, he gunned down a runner after he mis-played a bloop hit- the hitter tried to stretch a single into a double by Stonecipher got him (on a questionable call).

CF Rand Smith (20th round pick, 2009): 1-4 with two Ks and an RBI single was the line for Smith. He had a really wide stance at the plate, to the point of looking uncomfortable. His first at-bat, which he struck out swinging, was really ugly and included two check-swings for strikes. He made solid contact when he did hit the ball, with his single and a line out. He made a diving catch in centerfield that would've gone for extra bases. To complete the outfield assist trifecta, he too threw out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double.

DH Michael Brady (24th round pick, 2009): Brady went 1-2 and was replaced in the sixth inning. He was caught stealing on a swing-and-miss hit-and-run attempt.

DH Ernesto Manzanillo (signed as an undrafted free agent; spent 2008 with GCL and Jupiter): Manzy went 0-2 with a K after replacing Brady. He was one of the players whose at-bats were not taped.

C Carlos Paulino (signed as undrafted free agent; spent 2008 with GCL): This was Paulino's first game with Jamestown. He was 0-4 with two Ks. He doesn't look like a catcher, as he's shorter and not all that well-built. His arm seemed a bit inconsistent.

SS Jose Torres (signed as an undrafted free agent; spent 2008 with GCL): Torres was 0-4, but put the ball in play each time. His fly-out in the fifth was a warning-track shot.

SP Sandy Rosario (signed as an undrafted free agent; a fourth year player, spent 2007 and 2008 with Greensboro, but pitched only three games the last two years): Rosario went 5 innings, gave up 7 hits, one walk and two strikeouts. He seemed to be in trouble with baserunners each inning, but the Muckdogs usually made some mistakes that allowed him to get out of it. His scoreless streak is now 12.2 innings to open the year. Rosario explodes out of his wind-up and works from the first-base side of the rubber and fell off to that side after throwing a pitch, getting off-balance and not into fielding position. He throws almost completely over the top, but was able to keep the ball down for much of the game. He was a quick worker with no one on. He didn't use much offspeed stuff until the 5th...it appeared to be simply a change-up.

RP Kenny Fernandez (signed as an undrafted free agent; spent 2008 with GCL and Jupiter): Fernandez went 2.1 innings, giving up three hits. Despite being a reliever, he worked from the wind-up with the bases empty. It looks like he short-arms the ball to the plate, throwing from his ear it seemed.

RP Erick Carrillo (19th round pick, 2009): Carrillo earned the save, working 1.2 innings and striking out one. The .2 he threw in the 8th took all of two pitches. The third out was a fly out to the wall in left though. He seemed to have a hitch in his giddyup, perhaps at the leg lift. It was tough to tell, but it didn't look like a completely smooth delivery.

I'll try and make some more games this year to keep everyone abreast of the Jamestown happenings.
