Spahn, the winningest left-hander in baseball history, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973 after a 21-year career, spent mostly with the Braves. He also split his final season of 1965 with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants, finishing with a career mark of 363-245 and a 3.09 earned run average.

His 363 wins are fifth on baseball's all-time victory list.

A 14-time National League All-Star, Spahn holds or shares nine Braves franchise records, including most games started (635), complete games (374) and shutouts (63). He began his tenure with the club in Boston in 1942, then rejoined the team after the war in 1946 and had his greatest success when the franchise relocated to Milwaukee in 1953.

Spahn helped Boston to the National League pennant in 1948, but the Braves lost that World Series to Cleveland. That is also the year the phrase "Spahn and Sain and two days of rain" was coined, as Johnny Sain led the Braves with 24 wins and Spahn added 15.

The Braves won consecutive NL flags in 1957 and '58, beating the New York Yankees for the World Series title in '57 and losing to the Yankees the following year.

Spahn won 20-or-more games in a season 13 times to set an NL record, and led the league in victories eight times. He won the Cy Young Award in 1957, when only one award was given for both leagues, and in 1963 won 23 games at the age of 42.

Funeral arrangements, according to the Braves, are still pending.
