Marlins acquire Redman-clone from A's

Featured Replies

Redman's ERA was about a run higher in Detroit than what it was with us this past season. But that is pretty much the standard for any pitcher making the switch from AL to NL (where they play REAL baseball). That said, Redman was a tough luck pitcher and suffered more from Detroit's anemic offense and bad team play than his lack of pitching ability. The A's are a good team, although overrated (especially Beane). Redman will win AT LEAST 14 games there.

The average expected change from one league to another (whether it be AL to NL, or NL to AL) is about .25 runs off your ERA because most of the batters have not seen you before. Factor in that that the AL has scored approx .25 runs more runs per game than the NL over the course of the past three seasons. Redman, as an average if not slightly above average pitcher, will likely see an improvement of .50 or .70 runs shaved off his ERA. That of course is before factoring in park factors. Comerica, Pro Player and the Coliseum are known as pitcher''s parks for their deeper than normal fences and/or foul territory. Howeverfor a fly ball pitcher like Redman he's better at Pro Player than Oakland or Comerica. 50-60 points off his ERA. Then there's the factoring in of defense. The Marlins and Tigers outfielders weren't that great. Take the Marlins. Pierre misplayed a lot of balls but ended up eventually running them down. Hollandsworth wasn't particularly a strength, and Encarnacion was worse than his no error streak suggests. Overall though the Marlins outfielders would have helped him more than what the A's might put out there. So we probably shouldn't expect too much difference in ERA. Wins maybe if Redman can prove that he's a workhorse, and the A's feel comfortable allowing him to eat up innings with his 4 year deal. Don't know. I wouldn't risk my roto bucks on him is all I'm saying.

P.S. 9 players 9 fielders 9 hitters is real baseball.
