February 4, 200422 yr from the miami herald: Posted on Wed, Feb. 04, 2004? Williams picks Miami By MANNY NAVARRO mnavarro@herald.com AT HOME? Willie Williams tries on a UM jersey in the locker next to where Ray Lewis' old No. 52 was hanging. PHOTO COURTESY OF WILLIE WILLIAMS He tried on a Florida State jersey first, a Deion Sanders throwback. Then he tried on a Miami jersey, Jerome Brown's No. 96. Willie Williams kept everyone guessing until the end. When it came to make the dramatic decision, the 6-2 ?, 230-pound Carol City linebacker said the green and orange fit him best. ''I'm sorry to tell you this,'' Williams told a captivated audience of teachers, teammates and reporters from behind a podium in the school library Wednesday morning. ``But I'm going to UM.'' The announcement drew cheers from the crowd. It got even more excitement from the UM coaching staff 10 minutes later, when Williams called the athletic office to give them the news. With TV cameras rolling, linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves answered Williams' call. ''Coach Hargreaves, I'm there,'' Williams said on speaker phone. ``I'm going to UM, coach.'' Hargreaves ran to go ''tell the boss'' -- coach Admin Coker. Hargreaves was so pumped, he told Williams he was ``going to go smoke a cigar.'' Coker couldn't contain his excitement either. ''Willie Williams?'' Coker said. ``I'm doing great, Willie. I'm doing cartwheels over here. Let me tell you something, you're going to do great. You're committed to us and we're committed to you. ``Let's do a couple things -- let's win some championships and get you some rings. You got the plan. The three-year plan. Let's get it done.'' Williams then told Coker he wanted to come to Coral Gables right away. ''Matter fact, I might come by and tackle you today,'' Williams said. ``Play some one on one.'' Williams won't be headed to UM until Friday because NCAA rules won't permit him. After speaking with Coker, Williams talked about his decision and excitement to play for the Hurricanes. ''I actually made the decision when I stepped up to the podium,'' said Williams, a full academic qualifier with a 3.0 GPA and a 1070 SAT. ``I just wanted to see what my heart felt when I put on both jerseys and hats. ``When I put on the UM jersey, I got a feeling I couldn't explain. I said this is where I've got to be. This is where my heart is at. I've got to go and play at UM and try to win national championships.'' After months of laboring between UM and FSU, Williams said he's relieved that the process is finally over. He compared the experience to visiting a massage therapist. ''I'm real relaxed,'' he said. ``Now I'm ready to take the next step.'' Williams said he felt confident he'll be able to challenge former St. Thomas standout Tavares Gooden for the starting spot at weakside linebacker next fall and said he will be ready to play when the Hurricanes meet Florida State on opening night. DIXON, PONDER DECIDE Williams wasn't the only top local recruit that waited until the final moment to pick the Hurricanes. Miami received word from Booker T. Washington defensive tackle Antonio Dixon and Pace safety Lovon Ponder, too. Dixon had commited to Miami a few weeks ago, but was impressed during a visit to Florida State. BTW coach Tim ''Ice'' Harris said Dixon, who has lived in homeless shelters most of his life, couldn't pass up the opportunity to play at home. Ponder, meanwhile, picked the Hurricanes over N.C. State, who had been recruiting him hard for the past few weeks. The Hurricanes did lose out on a pair of Killian players. Cornerback J.R. Bryant, who had originally commited to Miami, decided to go with Florida State. The surprise was tight end Dane Guthrie, who passed on his Miami commitment and went with the Gators. With Kevin Everett and Notre Dame transfer Greg Olson, who was the nation's top high school tight end last year, in the mix, Guthrie decided to look elsewhere. ''A big name tight end just left [Florida],'' Guthrie said of senior Ben Troupe. ``And I thought I had a great opportunity to play my freshman year.'' Tailback Bobby Washington followed through with his commitment, becoming one of the four highly tailbacks to sign with UM. He joins a class that includes Pennsylvania native Andrew Johnson, South Dade's Charlie Jones and Louisiana running back Derron Thomas. It is an incoming group that recruiting experts believe is the best group of tailbacks in the country. With only sophomore-to-be Tyrone Moss and Frank Gore, a sophomore who is presently recovering from a torn ACL injury, returning for next season it also fills a huge need for the Hurricanes. With six running backs expected to compete for spots next season, rumors have circulated Washington (6-1, 200) could be switched to safety. He doesn't expect it to happen, though. ''They have me in mind only to play running back,'' Washington said. ``Why would they recruit the best running back available and not use him?'' ? South Miami All-State linebacker Javier Estopi?an signed with the University of Florida. Estopi?an, a state champion wrestler, chose the Gators over Ohio State. ? Edison All-State linebacker Brouce Mompremier decided to stay with his teammates and go to University of South Florida. Mompremier, who was among Dade's leading tacklers the past two seasons, joined center Richard Clebert, receiver Jackie Chambers, running back Chad Simpson and offensive tackle Mark Dile in signing with the Bulls. Edison offensive lineman Jacky Claude signed with FSU. Northwestern defensive back Trevor Ford also went to FSU. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/7873191.htm
