Not all teams "have no shot." A little more than 25% of the teams in major league baseball make the playoffs. How much of us discounted the Marlins in the beginning of 2003?

Furthermore, play off contenders last year (Oakland, Minnesota, Boston, New York, Florida, Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago) had their payrolls in this order lowest to highest:

Florida (49.05 million, 6th lowest in baseball) Result- world champions

Oakland (50.26 million, 8th lowest in baseball) Result- ALDS loss

Minnesota (55.51 million, 13th lowest in baseball) Result- ALDS loss

Chicago (79.87 million, 10th highest in baseball) Result- NLCS loss

San Francisco (82.85 million, 8th highest in baseball) Result- NLDS loss

Boston (99.95 million, 6th highest in baseball) Result- ALCS loss

Atlanta (106.24 million, 3rd highest in baseball) Result- NLDS loss

New York (152.75 million, 1st highest in baseball) Result- world series loss

The median payroll is about 68.5 million dollars. Of the 8 teams in the playoffs, 3 low payroll teams made it while 5 high payroll teams did. Furthermore, while there were 2 extremely low payroll teams, there were 3 extremely high payroll teams. Guys, money buys something you can't expect baseball to be some sort of communist wonderland where payroll doesn't matter.

Granted, the Yanks and Red Sox having every good player available is like market failure...it is not sound economic policy. A salary cap should be used for reasons concerning DIGNITY, not "fairness", because obviously though money can buy you a good team, that is not necessarily always the case. A salary cap in the 140 to 150 million dollar range doesn't punish owners willing to reinvest for their teams, but will not allow teams to have a 70 to 80 million dollar infield which is absurd.

Of course no one will read this and they will bicker about "the loss of competition" while the most recent world series winning team was a very small payroll team. Hypocrites.

One thing on the luxury tax. Giving money to rich guys to NOT reinvest in their teams is stupid. The luxury tax should force teams to spend every penny on more players or otherwise no luxury tax for you. That money should be going towards putting asses in seats, not asses in brand new executive yauchts

DO NOT SIGN. I have the right to love my over spending team as much as a cleveland fan has the right to love his UNDERSPENDING team. Since when were cities like Philli, pittsburgh, and cleveland small markets? those cities are huge!

Move the expos to NY.
