April 21, 200422 yr Author No I never said that Spring training does not attract visitors. But the main reason people especially snowbirds come down to Florida is the weather, beaches and golf. I lived up in Martin County from 1983 until 1995 and was there when the Mets moved into their spring training facility in 1988 which was built with tax dollars. I had season tickets and 95% of the fans were either from local area or retirees who had been coming down for the winters for years. In 2001 the Mets told the county that if they did not fix the stadium they would leave and guess what with tax dollars they upgraded the stadium. I went up to game against the Marlins and was talking to some friends and guess what still 95% of the fans were either from local area or retirees who had been coming down for the winters for years. I don't have a problem spending our tax dollars for spring training stadiums in the state but if we are going to that them the same opportunity should be given to the Marlins who play in this state not only during the regular season but during spring training.
