Redmond cleared for Sunday

MIAMI -- A chipped bone on the tip of his left pinkie won't keep Mike Redmond out of the lineup on Sunday.

Redmond fractured the finger during Friday night's 6-1 loss to the Braves. In the seventh inning, his hand was accidentally spiked by Atlanta's Marcus Giles as the catcher was diving headfirst back to second base. Juan Pierre had hit a hard liner to shortstop Rafael Furcal, who tried doubling up Redmond.

As Redmond beat the throw, Giles stepped on his finger.

"I always want to be out there playing," said Redmond, who was scheduled to be off on Saturday.

For a month, Redmond will wear a plastic splint on the finger. An X-ray taken on Friday night revealed the chip. Dr. Brian Fingado, the team's hand surgeon, also examined the hand.

Redmond, who is sharing catching duties with Ramon Castro, has been cleared to play.

"I was told that as long as I keep the tip of the finger straight, I can play through it," he said.

The team's medical staff has added some padding to Redmond's glove and is configuring a batting glove.

Redmond tested the finger while playing catch on Saturday. Hitting-wise, he thinks he will be fine.

"My bottom hand is pretty loose, anyway," he said. "Most of my swings are generated from the top hand. I feel like it will be easier to swing than to catch. What can you do? It's one of those freak deals."

Redmond has been catching left-hander Dontrelle Willis, and he expects to do so again on Sunday.
