lins RHP Beckett back on 15-day DL

July 6, 2004

MIAMI (Ticker) - The Florida Marlins placed righthander Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, one day after he returned from an injury.

Beckett was activated Monday after being on the DL since June 25 with a strain in his left side. But he pitched just four innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates before leaving with a "skin tear" on his right middle finger.

The 2003 World Series Most Valuable Player, Beckett is 4-5 with a 3.89 ERA in 13 starts this season.

"I really don't know why this keeps popping up, wrong vitamins or something," Beckett said. "It's almost become humorous. I've never had a blister that hurt this bad. ... Then to lose the game, it (stinks).

"I don't know what I've been bit by ... It's tough, but what the hell am I going to say about it?"

In 2002, Beckett had three separate stints on the disabled list with blister problems on the same finger. It was not an issue last year, although he spent seven weeks on the disabled list in 2003 with a right elbow sprain.

"He's had it tough," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. "The blister, the rib cage ... now this. You feel sorry for the guy."

The Marlins recalled catcher Josh Willingham from Class AA Carolina to take Beckett's spot on the roster.
