Fox buys into Rockies

A subsidiary of Fox Cable Networks will become a limited partner of the Colorado Rockies.

The deal for Fox Sports Baseball Holdings Inc. to buy in still needs the approval by Major League Baseball.

Financial terms weren't disclosed. But published reports put Fox's stake in the Rockies at between 10 percent and 15 percent and estimate the value at $20 million. Fox previously owned the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Denver-based Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain, part of Fox Cable Networks, has broadcast Rockies games since 1997. Fox Sports Net Thursday announced it will continue to carry Rockies games for another 10 years, a contract worth $200 million.

The Rockies are owned by seven limited partners, including Coors Brewing Co., Clear Channel Communications and the Denver Newspaper Agency.

Fox is making a move to stay alive in Denver. The Nuggets, Avalanche, Mamoths (lacrosse), and Crush (arena football team) are all owned by the Pepsi Arena Company and they are going to a new channel called the Altitude Sports Network. Fox is trying to hold the Rox so it can keep FSN Rocky Mountain on TVs in Colorado.
