July 15, 200421 yr D SEAN HILL SIGNS WITH PANTHERS SUNRISE - Florida Panthers General Manager Mike Keenan announced Thursday that the club has signed D Sean Hill to a two-year contract with an option for a third. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Hill, 34, tied a career-high last season with 13 goals and paced all Carolina defensemen with 39 points (13-26-39), while averaging a team-high 25:24 of ice time. The 13-year veteran has appeared in 682 National Hockey League contests with Montreal (1990-93), Anaheim (1993-94), Ottawa (1994-98), Carolina (1997-2000 & 2001-04) and St. Louis (2000-02) registering 57 goals, 144 assists and 786 penalty minutes. ?Sean is a veteran player who adds another dimension to our lineup,? Keenan said. ?He demonstrates great leadership skills with younger players and he is very familiar with the Southeast division. Sean was Carolina?s No. 1 defenseman last season and he can log a lot of ice time, while also contributing to our club offensively.? The Duluth, Minnesota native has played in 46 postseason contests (5-5-10) and was an integral part of Carolina?s Eastern Conference Championship club that battled Detroit in the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals. The 6-foot, 205-pound defenseman played for Panthers new head coach Jacques Martin during his stint with the Senators. He was originally drafted with the Canadiens ninth pick (167th overall) in the eighth round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Hill becomes the fourth free agent and third defenseman signed by Keenan this month joining G Jamie McLennan, D Eric Cairns and D Alexander Karpovtsev. I don't know about you but I love this move. If their are any Canes (NHL) fans on here I'd love to see their comments about Sean Hill.
