MIAMI -- The Marlins placed All-Star closer Armando Benitez on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to July 23, because of right elbow inflammation.

Benitez is eligible to be activated on Saturday, and chances are he will be healthy by the weekend.

While Benitez is out, newly acquired reliever Guillermo Mota will take over as the Marlins closer.

Benitez, who has 33 saves in 36 opportunities, has not pitched since July 22 at Philadelphia, when he tossed 1 2/3 innings.

Benitez began throwing again on Saturday, tossing a light catch. On Sunday, he threw a light bullpen and said he is not yet able to get full velocity.

The Marlins are off on Monday and they open a three-game series on Tuesday at Arizona. Benitez is scheduled to test the elbow off the mound again on Tuesday.

The only other time Benitez was on the DL with an arm-related injury was in 1996, when he suffered a strained right elbow.

Benitez, a key free agent signing before the season, is enjoying a strong bounce-back year after spending 2003 with the Mets, Yankees and Mariners.

The right-hander is 2-1 with a 1.25 ERA and opponents are batting .162 against him.
